Chapter 239

Sharon paused for a moment, her gaze steady as it met Carter’s eyes. Then she smiled, faintly.

“I wonder,” she said quietly, “whether the prestigious Hendricks Group can afford to keep an heir with a criminal record… and a

ruined face.”

Carter’s expression darkened until it was almost terrifying. “You’re threatening me?”

Sharon remained calm, her tone smooth and detached. “You overestimate me. I’m just a housewife. How could I possibly threaten you?”

She knew full well-Carter and Nate had been through life-and-death together. That kind of bond didn’t fade easily.

Otherwise, Carter wouldn’t tolerate a man like Nate, who brought him nothing but trouble.

Even when Nate insulted her to her face, again and again, Carter said nothing.

Yes, Nate mattered to him. But not enough to make him give up half his wealth.

She had written “half the assets” on the divorce papers, but Sharon understood that taking even that would be nearly impossible.

Even if they went to court, Carter would find a way to classify most of it as premarital property.

Xavier had told her: profits made from premarital assets weren’t subject to division.

Besides, Carter was the kind of man who’d had the prenup notarized long before the wedding ever took place.

If her lawyer was good, she might get a small cut. Anything over ten million? Not a chance.

Looking at the tension in his chiseled face, she added, “This whole mess Nate caused at the clinic-for Kelly’s sake, no less- has made Mr. Malcolm furious. He’s refusing to treat her now…”

She hadn’t even finished her sentence when Carter suddenly grabbed her chin, hard. He locked eyes with her, each word sharp as ice cracking against glass.

“Sharon. You’ve gone too far.”

His gaze was frigid, the kind of cold that sank straight to the bone

Sharon’s face went pale with pain, her lashes fluttering involuntarily.

She raised her foot and brought it down hard toward his

But Carter was ready-he stepped back just in time.

Sharon didn’t hesitate. She swung her hand toward his face.

He caught her wrist mid-air.

Maybe he was truly angry now-his grip was crushing, each movement a calculated domination that made resistance impossible.

For all his usual cold detachment, Carter was, at his core, a man used to control.

She had tested him again and again, pushed him to the edge.

There was no way he’d let her off easy.

He wanted to see her cornered. Wanted to break her pride.

But Sharon just laughed. Without warning, she opened her mouth and bit down on his arm.

Carter hadn’t expected that. He had no time to react.

Her teeth sank into his flesh, deep and merciless, like she meant to tear a piece of him off.

For the first time, Carter saw it in her eyes-pure hatred. Disgust. Emotions he’d never seen from her before.

Something in him twisted, foreign and raw. He pushed her away, reflexively.

She stumbled back but caught herself. Her eyes were empty-cool, emotionless, untouched by pain or fear.

“Carter,” she said flatly, “I’m not your toy. You don’t get to lay a hand on me whenever you feel like it. If you try it again, I swear I’ll take a piece of you with me. So you’ll remember-there’s a price to be paid for pushing someone too far.”
