Chapter 243

Sharon cast a glance at Kelly, then calmly picked up her phone and dialed a number.

Before Kelly could react or figure out what she was doing, the line connected.

Sharon spoke without emotion. “Kelly says she’s preparing for a concert soon and is worried an injury might upset you. So, she’s refusing to sort herbs. Mr. Malcolm doesn’t keep idle people around. Since that’s the case, you’d better come pick her up.”

There was a long silence on the other end. Then, he said, “Put Kelly on the phone.”

Sharon held the phone out to Kelly.

By now, Kelly had guessed who the call was to.

Her eyes welled up as she sniffled softly. “Carter, I’m just scared… If I hurt my hands, I won’t be able to play the violin properly. You know how it is-violinists like us even insure our hands…”

Carter replied, “I’ll have a few pairs of custom gloves sent over. They’ll protect your hands.”

Kelly froze, stunned. For a long moment, she couldn’t find anything to say.

When the silence dragged on, Carter spoke again. “I’ve got a meeting soon. If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up now.”

Half an hour later, four pairs of gloves arrived, delivered by Carter’s assistant.

One pair was child-sized, clearly meant for Matty.

Uriah tried on a pair and found they fit perfectly.

Turning them over in his hands, he said with a chuckle, “Well, now, this really is something-thin as a cicada’s wing, durable, and easy on the hands. You can sort herbs without a scratch… If I’d known Carter could produce something this useful, I would’ve had Kelly sort a few more bags.”

Kelly nearly choked on her own breath.

The gloves were here. That much was clear-Carter had no intention of bringing her back.

Left with no choice, she reluctantly resumed picking through the herbs.

She had promised Carter she’d come, but staying here wasn’t something she was willing to accept.

She wasn’t naïve. Of course, she knew the real reason Uriah wanted her here-to make things as difficult as possible for her.

She wasn’t about to play along.

Not long after, Kelly clutched her head and swayed on her feet. “I feel dizzy… Ah, I think something’s really wrong…”

Sharon’s lips curled in a cold smile. Without hesitation, she made a call to 911.

A few minutes later, an ambulance arrived and took Kelly away.

At the hospital, Carter rubbed his temples, visibly exhausted. “What happened this time?”

Sharon replied evenly, “Kelly suddenly said she was dizzy. Claimed she might be dying. I had no choice but to call 911. If we’d delayed and something had really happened, we couldn’t have afforded the responsibility.”

An hour later, Kelly was wheeled out.

The doctor gave a serious look. “Kelly’s condition isn’t looking good. She shouldn’t exert herself. She needs complete rest for

now…”

Uriah, who had accompanied them, suddenly spoke up. “Can you even treat this girl’s illness?”

The doctor looked confused by the question, but answered anyway. “Kelly has a terminal illness. We can try to manage the symptoms, but it’s not curable–”

Uriah cut him off bluntly. “If you can’t cure it, what right do you have to act like you know what you’re doing? People who might have been treated in time end up beyond help because of quacks like you.”

He had suspected it from the beginning-these doctors had already been bought off by Kelly.
