Chapter 245
Sharon was Carter’s wife-Nate wouldn’t dare touch her.
The only one he could actually lay a hand on was that powerless, penniless old man.
Sure, he often badmouthed Sharon in front of Carter, but if he ever really tried something physical, Carter wouldn’t let it slide so
easily.
Even a dog gets protected by its owner-Nate understood that well.
This time, with the three of them refusing to reconcile and the situation escalating, dragging things out would only backfire on him. He might be impulsive, but he wasn’t completely brainless.
Now that he understood the risks, he had no choice but to keep his head down for the time being.
He couldn’t afford to lose his position as heir to the Hendricks family-not over something like this.
Besides, the letter of forgiveness was still in Sharon’s hands. He didn’t need any more trouble.
Lowering his voice, Nate leaned closer. “Kelly, just hold on a bit longer. I heard Carter and Sharon are filing for divorce after the holidays.”
Kelly froze. “Divorce?”
“Yeah. Sharon’s using your illness and my letter as leverage. She made some outrageous demands-asked Carter for 100 million. He got pissed and decided to divorce her.”
“100 million?” Kelly gasped. “Are you serious? Is that even true?”
Nate had overheard bits and pieces of a conversation between Carter and Simon. As for the parts he didn’t catch, he filled those in with his own assumptions.
“It’s absolutely true,” he said with quiet confidence.
Kelly took a deep breath, doing her best to suppress the rush of excitement surging through her.
“So you’re saying… right after the holiday, they’re really going through with it?”
“Yeah. I asked Carter myself. He admitted it.”
There was a note of disdain in Nate’s voice. “But it’s just the start of the divorce cooling-off period. Who knows what that woman will do once it’s over? She’s taking 100 million from him-what if she changes her mind?”
That number made Kelly wince.
100 million? What gave Sharon the right to walk away with that kind of money? 1
After marrying Carter, wasn’t that money supposed to belong to her?
Kelly thought for a moment before speaking. “Nate, I have an idea, something that’ll make sure Sharon doesn’t get a single cent.
After learning that Sharon and Carter were preparing to divorce, Kelly suddenly quieted down.
During that time, Uriah deliberately assigned her the tasks no one wanted-pouring tea, carrying water, tedious, tricky chores. But she endured it all without complaint. (1)
That alone was enough to make Uriah suspicious.

“Something’s off,” he muttered. “Strange behavior always has a reason behind it. Sharon, what do you think she’s up to?”
Sharon watched Kelly quietly sorting herbs with uncharacteristic focus. “Maybe she’s waiting for us to let our guard down so she can suddenly ‘collapse’ or ‘faint’ again-just in time for Nate and Carter to witness it?”
Uriah snorted. “So what if they do? I’m not afraid of her playing that game.”
Sharon lowered her voice. “Mr. Malcolm, I’m going to the courthouse tomorrow to file the divorce paperwork with Carter. I might be a bit late coming in.”
Uriah had long known about it. He wasn’t surprised.
“Best to get out of that mess sooner rather than later,” he said with a nod.
After a few more words, Sharon checked the time and headed out with Matty.
The next day, Sharon arrived at the courthouse with all the paperwork, along with the letter of forgiveness.
This time, she didn’t show up way too early. Just five minutes ahead of schedule.
If Carter dared show up late, she would tear the letter apart right then and there.
At 9:58 a.m., a sleek, black, limited-edition luxury car pulled up beside her. The door opened, and Carter stepped out-tall, poised, and impossibly composed.
