Every doctor and medical team treating Kelly had been carefully picked by her. There was absolutely no way Carter would be able to trace anything.
The only problem would come later-when she didn’t actually die.
But this encounter with that phony doctor was a stroke of luck; it gave her the perfect excuse to escape the mess of not being ” dead” months from now.
Even if Sharon tried to expose her, neither Carter nor Nate would believe it. If anything, they’d probably accuse Sharon of being cruel and malicious.
Sharon’s voice pulled Kelly from her thoughts.
“Carter gave up our marriage and 100 million for Kelly’s life. Kelly is so gentle and kind. She might start blaming herself, might feel she’s nothing but a burden. If she can’t bear the guilt and chooses to die instead of taking the medicine, what then?”
Nate’s face froze. “You’re right… Carter gave up so much. Knowing how kind Kelly is, she really might think that way. No, I need to take full responsibility. I’ll make sure she takes her meds from now on, no matter what!”
Kelly nearly fainted from rage. He believed that?
If the pills Sharon gave her were slow-acting poison, was Nate trying to kill her himself?
Idiot!
Carter wasn’t as easy to fool. His eyes stayed fixed on the pill in Sharon’s hand.
“Can I take one for lab testing?”
Without hesitation, Sharon held out the bottle. “Sure. Pick whichever one you want.”
The way she agreed so easily, letting him choose freely, so open and calm-it made even Kelly start to feel a twinge of doubt.
Could it be that quack doctor misdiagnosed her? Prescribed the wrong thing?
Carter carefully wrapped up a pill. “I have work this afternoon. I’ll head out first.”
Nate was also in a hurry to get home and apply his facial mask. “Carter, I’ll go with you.”
Carter gave Sharon one long, steady look before turning and walking away.
The next day, the lab results came back and were delivered straight to Kelly.
“Kelly, we’ve tested the pill. There’s no sign of toxicity, but it doesn’t cure anything either. The protein content is a bit high, so it might qualify as a basic health supplement. Nothing more, nothing less.”
Hearing that, Kelly finally relaxed.
A flash of disdain flickered in her eyes.
Sharon sure knew how to bluff. Talking about the medicine like it was some miracle cure, full of divine ingredients.
She’d almost believed it-almost thought Mr. Malcolm was some kind of miracle doctor. Turns out, she’d been worrying for nothing.
And that fool Sharon actually got conned by such an obvious fraud.
