Sharon froze mid-step and turned to Carter, disbelief written across her face. “What did you just say?”

Carter’s lips curled into a slight smile.

“You suddenly changed your mind about giving Kelly the medicine. Then you asked me for money. And now, over something so small, you’re making things hard for her… Sharon, are you sure this isn’t just your way of trying to get my attention?”

Sharon let out a mocking laugh. “Carter, your ego is astounding. Not everyone’s interested in picking up someone else’s trash. She might not mind the filth, but I do.”

Her words landed hard. Both Carter and Kelly’s expressions shifted unpleasantly.

Then Sharon remembered the ten million that Carter had just transferred to her account. She tossed the medicine toward him.

“I keep my word. This is the full first course. If she doesn’t take it and her condition worsens, that’s not my problem.”

She shook off Carter’s hand and turned to leave.

He stepped in front of her again. “You haven’t apologized to Kelly.”

Sharon raised her eyes to his, a quiet smile playing on her lips. “I’m not going to. What are you going to do about it?” (1)

Carter’s pupils narrowed. He was about to say something when Sharon’s voice cut in first.

“Oh, and don’t forget, Kelly’s remaining medication is still with me. If I get angry…” She smiled at him, voice soft and pleasant. “Then Kelly won’t be getting the rest.”

Her eyes met his. Still smiling, still calm.

“You’re the ones who need something from me, not the other way around. So don’t come at me like you’re doing me a favor.”

Then the smile vanished, replaced by an icy edge.

“If she dares provoke me again, forget making her kneel-I’ll make you kneel. And I want to see for myself what matters more to you, your pride, or Kelly’s life?”

She shoved past him and walked away.

Carter stood frozen, staring at her receding figure.

This time, he didn’t stop her.

Uriah hadn’t expected Kelly to be this vicious. 1

Poison?

The thought alone made his blood run cold.

He didn’t want that kind of danger hanging around. And since today was her last day anyway, he threw her out on the spot.

Under Carter’s supervision, Kelly took the medicine. And when Uriah finally kicked her out, she didn’t look upset at all. On the contrary, she was smiling smugly.

“Well, since you don’t need my help anymore, I’ll head out. But if you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to ask. If I have time, I’ll definitely come by.”

Uriah’s beard practically bristled with rage. “You wicked girl! How can your heart be so toxic?”

Kelly gave him a look of mock confusion. “I don’t understand what you mean, Mr. Malcolm.”

Her words were innocent, but the provocation in her eyes wasn’t hidden in the slightest.

Uriah was an old man with no power, and Sharon was but a housewife who hadn’t worked in five years. What did she have to be afraid of?

Even if they ran crying to Carter, he’d never believe them.

Sharon looked at Kelly’s smug expression and, instead of getting angry, let out a quiet laugh.

“Kelly, after all that-kneeling, slapping yourself, trampling your pride into the dirt-you think this is something to be proud of?”

She paused. Then smiled. “Oh, I get it now. You threw your dignity away a long time ago. What’s a little kneeling? You’d probably eat shit if you had to.”

Kelly’s expression froze. A flicker of hatred flashed in her eyes.

“You-”

She turned her head and spotted Carter outside, speaking on the phone.

Her smile returned.
