Nate wore a smug expression. At his side, a faint smile tugged at the corners of Kelly’s lips.
“Return?”
What a carefully chosen word.
Sharon didn’t react with anger. Her tone remained calm, almost light. “Carter, shouldn’t you understand what actually happened before making a decision?”
Carter’s face was impassive.
“Kelly and I had just left the clinic, and you showed up here right after. You really expect me to believe you aren’t deliberately trying to cause trouble?”
Sharon glanced at his face, then at Kelly-smiling now, taunting.
She smiled faintly back. “Alright. Since Kelly likes it so much, I’ll let her have it.”
Carter’s expression eased a little. Kelly’s smile deepened, and Nate looked so pleased he might’ve wagged his tail if he had one.
Sharon held out the bracelet. “Here, Kelly. It’s yours.”
Kelly didn’t hesitate. She reached out to take it.
To her, this bracelet was more than just jewelry. It was proof-of Carter’s preference, of her victory over Sharon.
But just as her fingers brushed the bracelet, it slipped.
Clink!
The crisp sound echoed through the silence as the bracelet hit the floor and shattered. (1)
Everyone froze. Kelly stared, motionless, stunned.
Then Sharon’s voice broke the silence, mild but edged with reproach. “Kelly, I thought you wanted this bracelet so badly? How could you be so careless? You didn’t even hold onto it properly.”
Kelly blinked, slowly coming back to herself. “Sharon… you did that on purpose!”
Sharon lifted a brow, feigning confusion. “Kelly, you’re the one who dropped it. How is that my fault?”
She tilted her head slightly. “Besides, I said you were careless. Why jump to accusing me of doing it deliberately?”
Her voice paused-then she smiled. “Unless… this isn’t the first time you’ve pulled something like this?”
Nate snapped, “Carter, are you seeing this? Sharon’s being vicious! She clearly dropped the bracelet on purpose and then blamed Kelly for it. Shameless!”
Carter had seen through Sharon’s little maneuver. His voice came down hard and flat. “Sharon. Apologize to Kelly.”
Her tone was casual, almost lazy. “No.”
Carter faltered, caught off guard.
Nate’s outrage only grew. “Carter, she intentionally damaged store property! We should call the police-let her cool her heels in jail for a few days. See how stubborn she is then!”
Sharon smiled sweetly. “Nate, you don’t seem to know the law very well. If you damage an item in a store, all you need to do is pay for it at full price. No jail time necessary.”

Nate’s eyes lit up like he’d caught her red-handed. He jabbed a finger toward her, practically shouting. “She admitted it! Carter, did you hear that? She admitted it was on purpose!”
Sharon winced, rubbing her ear. “Nate, not only is your logic flawed, but your hearing seems questionable too. I said that if something gets broken, you pay for it. Somehow you twisted that into me admitting I broke it on purpose. Explain to me–
where’s the connection?”
Nate puffed up, full of righteousness. “You’re talking about paying for it because you don’t want to go to jail! You’re guilty, and you’re afraid!”
The crowd began to exchange glances, expressions shifting from awkward to outright baffled.
Was this guy for real?
Having someone like him shopping in the same store… it lowered the collective IQ of the room.
Even Kelly’s face was starting to cloud with embarrassment.
Meanwhile, Sharon remained composed, unmoved by Nate’s flailing.
“I never said I would be the one compensating. I was just educating you on the basics of the law, Nate.”
