Chapter 271

Nate opened his mouth to speak again, but Carter’s voice cut in, cold and sharp, “Enough!”

Nate fell silent, clearly unwilling but with no room left to argue.

Sharon, unfazed, turned toward the sales associate who was standing nearby. “Whoever broke it-me or Kelly-just charge it to Mr. Biggs’s account.”

She smiled faintly, then added, “Kelly is Mr. Biggs’s precious first love. If she broke it, he’d pay for it without hesitation. As for me…”

Her gaze slid to Carter. “As Mrs. Biggs, I believe I’m also entitled to put things on my husband’s account, aren’t I?”

The moment the words left her lips, murmurs spread through the room like wildfire.

“Mrs. Biggs? Did she just say she’s Carter Biggs’s wife?”

“Wasn’t there some huge scandal about him and another woman recently?”

“He’s been married for five years. They never had a wedding, so it’s been kept under wraps. But everyone in their circle knows.”

“Then who were those two just now? That guy called her Carter’s beloved! What’s going on here?”

“What else could it be? The other woman. Some things never change-men are all the same.”

Disdainful glances began raining down on Carter and Kelly.

Kelly bit her lip and stepped forward. “This was my fault. I didn’t catch the bracelet Sharon handed me. So, I’ll pay for it.”

Nate looked stunned. “Kelly! Sharon did it on purpose-you saw it! Why should we be the ones paying?”

“Enough, Nate.” Kelly cut him off firmly, her face solemn. “I didn’t catch it. Sharon isn’t to blame.”

Then she turned to Sharon and said, “Sharon, I apologize for what just happened. I’m sorry.”

Though her words were sincere, her eyes were rimmed red, tears brimming as though she’d suffered a great injustice.

Sharon let out a soft laugh. “Kelly, that bracelet is worth five million. I’m afraid even your entire net worth wouldn’t be enough to cover it.”

Kelly gave a fragile, bitter smile-like a wronged girl in a melodrama, too pitiful to look at directly.

“I… I’ll find a way.”

Nate couldn’t bear to watch anymore. He stepped up with exaggerated righteousness. “I’ll pay for Kelly.”

Sharon smiled. “Great. Go ahead.”

Nate pulled out his card, ready to swipe it-only to suddenly freeze. He’d forgotten. Most of his funds were tied up in investments. He didn’t have that kind of liquidity right now.

Carter, of course, noticed. His voice was calm but firm as he stepped in. “Nate, take Kelly home. I’ll deal with things here.”

After the crowd had dispersed, Carter turned to Sharon. His gaze was ice-cold.

“Sharon. You think I didn’t notice you dropped that bracelet on purpose?”

There was no panic on Sharon’s face. She looked at him with the same easy calm, lips still curved in a smile.

“I always thought you had poor eyesight. Seems I was wrong. Sometimes, you really do see things clearly.”

He heard the sarcasm in her tone. But what he hadn’t expected was for her to admit it outright-with such calm defiance. His eyes darkened. “And you still claim you’re not targeting Kelly? Then what would you call what you just did?”

Sharon smiled faintly. “Isn’t that exactly what Kelly has been doing to me all along? Now that the tables have turned… it hurts, doesn’t it?”
