Chapter 279
The two of them were deep in conversation when Sharon’s phone suddenly rang.
Wendy glanced over, her face tightening with unease. “Don’t tell me Carter’s pulling something again.”
Sharon took out her phone. It was a call from Madeline.
She hesitated for a moment, then answered. If Carter really wasn’t coming, she needed to know right away.
Madeline’s voice on the other end was sharp and cold. “Sharon, Theo has a fever. Come back here immediately and take care of
him.”
Madeline’s tone hadn’t changed-it was still that same commanding superiority.
Sharon’s voice was calm. “If he’s sick, call a doctor. I’m not a physician. Calling me won’t help.”
There was a stunned silence, then Madeline erupted, her voice laced with fury. “You’re Theo’s mother! How can you be so heartless?!”
Sharon’s tone didn’t waver. “Carter and I are getting divorced. Theo belongs to the Biggs family now. If anything happens from now on, don’t come looking for me. Unless, of course, you’re giving up custody. In that case, I’ll come pick him up myself.”
“Divorce?” Madeline’s voice jumped an octave. “You two are getting divorced?!”
“That’s right.” Sharon checked the time. “Carter should be arriving in five minutes.”
There was no grief or disappointment on Madeline’s end-only undisguised satisfaction.
She had never liked Sharon.
If Theo hadn’t had a fever and kept crying out for his mother, she wouldn’t have called at all.
The housekeepers could keep watch through the night, but none could match a mother’s touch.
And if Sharon came over to do it for free-well, all the better.
Still, she hadn’t expected that her son was finally divorcing Sharon.
What wonderful news. A cause for celebration.
Madeline’s voice dripped with smug victory. “I warned you from day one – a middle school dropout could never be good enough for Carter. That divorce was inevitable.”
“But since you did give birth to Theo,” she added, tossing out the concession like spare change, “here’s some free advice: Stay gone. To a man like him? A nobody with no education, no connections, who trapped him with a baby? You’ll always just be the mistake he regrets.”
And with that, she hung up.
Wendy turned to Sharon. “What happened? Don’t tell me Carter’s pulling another stunt and won’t make it?”
“No,” Sharon replied. “That was Madeline. She said Theo has a fever.”
Wendy raised a brow. “Again? Theo’s been getting sick a lot lately. Back when you were managing his health, he barely got sick at all. The last time he had this many fevers, he was under three, wasn’t he?”
A shadow crossed Sharon’s face.
“Staying up late, eating junk food outside… He’s lactose intolerant, has a weak stomach, and still eats sweets and cold drinks all day.”

Wendy studied her expression “Forget Carter-he’s trash. But Theo… he’s your son. Can you really let him go?”
Sharon opened her mouth to respond, but before she could say anything, a tall figure appeared in the distance, slowly making its way toward them.
Wendy followed her gaze.
“It’s Carter! He really came!”
Somehow, Wendy seemed even more excited than Sharon.
