Rosalie was lucky enough to have finished her early shift today.
She didn’t go to the villa; instead, she went straight to the kindergarten to pick up her little girl and take her back to their old home.
Usually, if Rosalie didn’t return to the villa, Pauline wouldn’t ask any questions. Pauline knew that Rosalie was busy with work and that sometimes she stayed at their old home. Rosalie’s reason was simple: that house had once been hers and her mother’s, and it still held memories of her mother’s life. She couldn’t stand to let the house fall into disrepair. Thus, whenever she had the time, she would visit and stay to tidy up for a day or two.
When Starling saw her outside the classroom, the little one eagerly rushed into her arms and hugged her tightly. “Mommy, why are you here?”
“I’m here to pick up my baby girl!” Rosalie gently pinched her daughter’s nose. “What’s wrong? Don’t you want me here?”
When Rosalie was busy with work or staying at the villa, she would place Starling in full–day care at the kindergarten. But as soon as she had some free time, she would always prioritize bringing her back home.
Luckily, the kindergarten was right within her neighborhood. It was just a short walk from her home, making it incredibly convenient.
Starling giggled in her arms, her bright, sparkling eyes shining like a sky full of Starlings. “Mommy, it’s only Tuesday! I’ve only been at kindergarten for two days.”
“Even two days is too long! What can I do when I miss my baby girl so much?” Rosalie said, unable to help herself as she kissed her daughter’s tiny, rosy cheek.
“Fine!” Starling declared with a playful tilt of her head. “Then I’ll go home to keep Mommy company!”
She darted back into the classroom, cheerfully bidding farewell to her teacher and classmates. Afterward, she grabbed her little backpack, took Rosalie’s hand, and skipped out of the school with uncontainable joy. “Mommy, let’s go home!”
Rosalie glanced down, smiling at the little one by her feet. She felt her heart swell with a warmth so full it completely dispelled the inexplicable gloom she had carried throughout

Six years ago, during her most helpless, lonely, and desolate days, Starling had arrived unexpectedly in her life.
How wonderful!
How could she ever bear to hand her baby girl over to someone else, someone so pure beautiful?
and
Of course, she couldn’t! Not even Thomas, her biological father, had any right to take her baby girl away! Starling was her flesh and blood, her precious little darling, her very life, and the source of all her hope. She couldn’t even bear to imagine what would happen if Starling was no longer by her side …
She would probably lose her mind.
“Mommy, you’re squeezing my hand too hard…
”
Suddenly, Starling’s pitiful little voice broke the silence.
Rosalie snapped out of her daze, immediately letting go of her daughter’s tiny hand. She quickly crouched and apologized, saying, “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. Did Mommy hurt you? Here, let me blow on it. Mommy didn’t mean to hurt you …
Rosalie held her daughter’s tiny hand and pressed it against her lips, blowing on it gently, her heart full of regret.
The tension from earlier had caused her to lose control over her grip without realizing it.
