Thomas raised an eyebrow, though his tone remained serious. “If that’s the case, Dr. Hawthorne, maybe you should just quit. If you can’t handle being an intern assistant, how could I trust you to be a doctor? How could I expect you to take charge in the operating room? With the responsibility we have toward our patients and the hospital, I suggest you resign.”
Rosalie bit down on her lip upon hearing his words.
As expected, he always had the upper hand.
Every word hit like a sharp dagger, cutting straight to her vulnerability.
The office fell silent in an instant, and the air felt thick and still.
They stood locked in a standoff, neither willing to break the silence.
In the end, Rosalie couldn’t endure the tension and gave in first.
“Fine!”
With no other choice, she dropped all pretense and confessed honestly, “I admit it that I don’t want to take on this so–called assistant role because of you! Yes, it’s personal! Because I know I can’t be as indifferent as you are. Just a few days ago, we were still …”
At that point, Rosalie faltered, too embarrassed to continue. She left the rest unsaid, though the tips of her ears flushed a faint red. Gathering her courage, she steeled herself and pressed on. “I didn’t expect that seeing me again, you could so calmly treat me like a stranger. Sorry, but I’m not as detached as you are.”
Thomas cast her a cool glance, his faint smile tinged with sarcasm. “Dr. Hawthorne, when it comes to indifference, I’m no match for you! Two years of a relationship, and you can dismiss it with just the word ‘mistake.‘ Your ability to detach is something I could never achieve. And judging by your words just now, am I to assume you’re still hung up on that night? If that night caused you any misunderstanding, I apologize. But let me make it clear- our relationship ended that night. From then on, we’re nothing more than ordinary colleagues. That’s all.”
When a man chooses to be heartless, their demeanor could make you grit your teeth in fury! Rosalie thought to herself.
“Dr. Lange, it seems the one misunderstanding things here is you. Yes, I absolutely care about

what happened that night, but not because I’m pining over you. Let me tell you, even being bitten by a dog leaves a wound that aches for a week, let alone … being raped by someone!”
As Rosalie finished her last words, she could clearly see the storm raging in Thomas’s deep, dark eyes. His face darkened instantly before he spoke icily, “Leave!”
After Rosalie left Thomas’s office, she felt a strange weight settle in her chest, like a waterlogged ball of cotton clogging her lungs, making it hard to breathe.
“Rosa, I’ve been looking for you!”
Before she could compose herself, the associate head of department, Gabriel Lewis, suddenly stopped her.
“Dr. Lewis, is there something you need from me?” she asked, stopping mid–step and gradually regaining her composure.
“You’ve heard about Dr. Lange selecting one of the four of you to be his intern assistant, haven’t you?”
“Yes, I’ve already heard about it.”
“Good. Dr. Lange just joined us, so he’s not familiar with anyone in our department. That’s why he entrusted me with this decision. After careful consideration, I’ve decided to choose you!”
Rosalie was speechless.
So…
