Chapter 1
I can’t swallow this shit–gotta go after Ophelia,” I seethed, staring at Lily’s casted leg where she’d been “messed up” by Ophelia Reed’s kid, Liam, at that goddamn parent–child gig.
Julian was still playing defense for his ex–flame, which only fired me up more.
“Knock it off, will ya? Kids roughhouse at events–shit happens. Why you gotta make a mountain outta a molehill? Besides, Ophelia was your classmate, right?”
“Your classmate, not mine. Don’t think I don’t know she’s your goddamn first love!”
You’re being irrational!”
I stormed out, leaving him sputtering behind me, the door slamming like his pride.
What I couldn’t wrap my head around was why he’d rather hit up Ophelia’s kid’s event than our own daughter’s. Like, who the hell’s kid is he anyway?
But I was so amped up, I must’ve spaced on traffic. Next thing I know, I’m waking up blind as a bat after some pileup. And that’s when I heard it–Lily and Julian, whispering like a couple of snakes.
Turns out my own flesh and blood had sided with Ophelia, even cooked up this whole scam to butter her up.
So where did that leave me?
The next day, though, when the docs rolled in, those two put on an Oscar–worthy show.
Please, you gotta fix her eyes! Losing sight is like losing your soul’s window, y’know? Money’s no object–do whatever it takes!” Julian blubbered.
Lily joined in, fake tears streaming:
“Please save my mom! She got hit ‘cause she was sticking up for me, going after those jerks who hurt me. If it wasn’t for me….*
She sniffled.
“Sorry, Mom. But I’ll be your eyes now–wherever you go, I got you”
Their act had the staff wiping tears, calling them saints. If I hadn’t heard their midnight chat, I’d be sobbing too.
Cops showed up, and the performance continued:
“Officer, please find that driver! Can’t just leave someone blind and split–they need to pay!” Julian ranted.
“My mom’s innocent–she was just trying to help me. Somebody’s gotta take responsibility!” Lily wailed
The officer nodded, all serious: “Don’t worry, we’ll track ‘em down. Justice will be served”
Once they cleared out, Julian and Lily grabbed my arm.
“Babe, chill out. My bad, okay? You gotta pull through,” Julian cooed.
Yeah, Mom–your girl’s got your back. Just say the word,” Lily chimed in.

Blind, but not stupid. I deadpanned: “Cool. I wanna jump off the 21st floor. Lily, walk me over.”
Sure, let’s go–wait, what?” Lily finally caught on, while Julian scowled:
“Chloe, cut the crap. This is partly your fault. If you hadn’t nixed Ophelia and Liam from working here, I wouldn’t have gone to that event, Lily wouldn’t have gotten hurt, and you wouldn’t be… y’know. So maybe lay off the drama
