Fred stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
I figured, with how proud he was, he’d probably call in a few days just to tell me to sign the papers and leave.
But the first call I got wasn’t from him–it was from my mom.
Her voice was full of excitement. “Tania, Fred just sent me the latest designer bags and clothes! He even bought your brother a supercar and gave your dad land in the southern district to develop!
“Your dad’s been smiling nonstop. He said it’s all thanks to his smart daughter, who knows how to win over the Bur- nett family’s golden goose. Tania, you’re amazing! I’m out shopping with the ladies and they keep saying how lucky I am to have you marry into wealth.”
My heart sank.
So this was my worth in her eyes? Just someone who married rich and sweet–talked a husband who never loved me, so my family could keep enjoying the perks.
I held back my anger and told her, “Mom, don’t take anything else from Fred. I’m divorcing him.”
I couldn’t help it–I poured my heart out, telling her how Fred never loved me, how he blamed me for pushing away the woman he really cared about, and how his side chick had made my life miserable all these years.
But my mom just brushed it off.
“Don’t be silly. A powerful man like him is bound to have other women around. You just need to be more understand- ing. What matters is keeping your title as Mrs. Burnett.
“Plus, you’re pregnant now. If it’s a boy, no one can shake your place. If it’s a girl, then just try for another baby.”
Her words left me in tears. Through sobs, I asked her in pain, “Mom, you pushed me to marry him just so the Dawson family could rise. And now you want me to use my baby to patch up a broken marriage?
“I’ve loved Fred for ten years. I can’t pretend it’s okay watching him be with someone else every day!”
After hanging up, I headed straight to Fred’s office.
When he saw me, he didn’t seem surprised at all. He was leaning casually in his leather chair, twirling a pen between his fingers. His dark tie made his sharp features look even colder.
“Here to apologize?” he asked casually. “Since you’re pregnant, I’ll let it go this time. But stop bringing up divorce. Just behave and be Mrs. Burnett at home.”
He slid a card toward me.

“There’s 800 thousand in there. Consider it as compensation.”
I didn’t touch it. I just looked at him calmly.
“Fred, you don’t love me. You’ve always hated me. Can’t I step away from this marriage myself?”
His brows knit sharply, and the tight line of his jaw showed a controlled anger simmering beneath the surface.
the
“Is this a new way of getting my attention?” he snapped.

“You’re jealous, aren’t you? Let me make it clear, after Pamela, I’ll never love anyone else. But no one else will take your place either.
“Let’s be realistic, Respecting each other is the best we can do. Don’t expect love from me anymore. Ask for some- thing else if you want.”
His fake affection made me sick.
He kept playing the role of the man still hung up on his first love, but at the same time, he was tangled up with differ-
ent women.
Like a bad actor, he’d been faking that deep love for years.
I looked straight at him, voice steady. “I don’t need anything else, Fred. I just want a divorce.
“That’s it.”
The office felt frozen, like ice.
He stared at me in silence, the pressure in his gaze tightening like a noose.
Finally, he picked up the agreement and signed it without hesitation.
“Fine. Have it your way.”
I carefully folded the signed papers and smiled at him for real this time.
“Thank you, Fred.”
Thank you for showing me that the love I once held so tightly would one day become the very thing that hurt me
most.
