Chapter 1
My dad died saving Hazel. He’d rushed into a burning building to rescue his precious little princess, but he’d gotten trapped. Hazel had escaped, but she hadn’t looked back.
I rushed to the hospital, but when I saw his charred body in the morgue, I couldn’t stop grinning.
“Honey, try to keep it down,” a nurse whispered, giving me a look.
I mumbled an apology, but when I went to get his death certificate, I was practically skipping. I rushed him through cremation, contacted his lawyer, and confirmed he hadn’t left a will.
No wife, no secret children. Just me, his only daughter.
The entire inheritance was mine.
I wasted no time transferring everything into my name the mansion in Bel Air, his company, the fleet of luxury cars in the garage.
Oh, and the house he’d let Hazel live in rent–free.
I didn’t like the idea of her squatting in my property, so one sunny afternoon, I went over to ask her to move out.
She refused to open the door, even called the cops.
The moment they arrived, the door swung open.
That’s her! She’s trespassing! Hazel yelled, pointing at me.
“I was just knocking,” I said to the officers, playing innocent. I didn’t force my way in.”
“Knocking? You were practically breaking down the door!” Hazel said, clinging to one of the officer’s arms. “Arrest
her!”
The officer looked at me, unimpressed.
“What’s going on here?”
“I was just knocking. Is that a crime?” I asked, batting my eyelashes.
“It could be considered harassment,” he said. “Even vandalism.”
Hazel smirked.
“This is my house,” I said, pulling out the deed and my ID. I can knock on my own door if I want to. But someone’s refusing to leave. Isn’t that considered.. assets misappropriated?”
“What are you talking about? This is Ethan’s house! I’ll call him right now! He’ll set you straight!” Hazel said. frantically dialing my father’s number.

It went straight to voicemail.
Stop it. Hazel. I said, laughing softly. “He’s not going to answer.”
Don’t be ridiculous, Cecilia! He’s probably busy!”
My smile widened. “Yeah, busy.. going to heaven.”
Hazel’s face went white. “What do you mean? Ethan’s your father! You’re cursing him! He’ll break your legs when he
hears about this!”
“He can’t hear you anymore, Hazel,” I said, crossing my arms. “Remember that fire at your school the other day? Dad went to drop something off for you, and when he saw your classroom was on fire, he rushed in to save you. He couldn’t find you, and… well, he died.”
