Chapter 10

In his past life, after Lucas held Emily’s lifeless body and set himself ablaze, he had expected to descend into endless hell.

Yet when he opened his eyes again, he found himself reborn-back to the early days of his marriage with Emily.

What he never anticipated was that Emily had also been reborn, just like him.

When he saw her weeping in his arms, choking out apologies-“I was blind, I hurt you, but I swear I’ll make it right this

time, I’ll love you properly”-his heart had surged with something dizzying, like winning the lottery.

But just as quickly, he steeled himself and pushed her away.

Because he was afraid.

Afraid she would repeat the past-sweet-talking him, only to turn cold again.

In their last life, she had rather relieve herself alone than share a bed with him.

Then she had eloped with a gigolo, only to be kidnapped and killed by him.

This time, even as Emily swore she had changed, that she would truly love him, Lucas refused to be fooled again.

He hardened his heart.

If she wanted to atone, fine-he would test her.

How far would she go for him?

So he played cruel.

He hired a KTV girl to pose as his mistress, deliberately wounding Emily again and again.

Watching her love for him wither into numbness should have satisfied him.

But it didn’t.

A part of him panicked-wasn’t she supposed to love him unconditionally?

Why couldn’t she endure this, when he had suffered a thousand times worse for her?

And then there was Lillian. Emily’s jealousy had falsely accused Lillian of putting Margaret in a vegetative state.

Enough.

He would send Emily abroad-let her reflect.

Once she truly repented, he’d bring her home.

And if she returned, humbled and remorseful, then he would reveal his own rebirth.

They could start anew.

But fate laughed at his plans.

The moment he heard of the plane crash, his world shattered.

He had been wrong. Horribly, unforgivably wrong.

Lucas collapsed, sobbing so violently that metallic blood surged up his throat-

Then darkness.

When he woke, a stranger stood by his bed. “Mr. Black, my condolences. I am Miss Carter’s divorce attorney.”
