Chapter 9
The crowd grew even more uneasy at the sight of him.
Some couldn’t bear it and spoke up, “Lucas, I know Emily’s death was… sudden. But it’s not like you loved her, right? Now that she’s gone, doesn’t that make things easier for you and Lillian?”
“Yeah, exactly,” others chimed in.
“Back then, you told us yourself that your marriage to Emily was just for business, no feelings involved. Why torture
yourself like this over her?”
His head bowed, until finally, after a long silence, a murmur escaped him. “No feelings…”
No feelings?
How could there have been no feelings? He and Emily-
Lillian’s eyes lit up at his words. She had nearly forgotten this crucial point in her frustration over being ignored earlier.
That was right. Lucas had never loved Emily. His shock was just from the suddenness of her death. That was why he had momentarily overlooked her.
Seizing the opportunity, she rushed forward, bending down to help him up. “Lucas, it’s true-you never cared about Emily. What’s done is done. Seeing you like this breaks my heart.”
Something in her words snapped inside him.
Lucas’s head jerked up, and he shoved Lillian away so hard she stumbled and fell. “Get out!”
His friends hurried to pull Lillian up, demanding to know what his problem was.
But Lucas drove them all away-every last one.
How could he not have loved Emily?
In his past life-and in this one-he had loved her desperately.
Yes.
Lucas had also been reborn.
