My Enemy Mate 14

Chapter 14

Evelynne looked confused. Why would Liora be here?

But Carmen ignored her question and grabbed her arm, pulling her toward the second floor.

Ever since entering the pack house, Evelynne had been hit by a foul stench that grew stronger the higher they climbed.

She frowned, unable to stop herself from complaining.

“Carmen, where are you taking me? Why does it smell so bad? What is that stench?”

Carmen glanced at her.

“I’m taking you to see Liora.”

His words made Evelynne’s frown deepen, and she couldn’t help but ask.

“Liora’s dead, isn’t she?”

Carmen didn’t answer. He led her up to the second floor where the lights were off and the darkness was thick. The smell

nearly made Evelynne vomit, but he kept leading her forward. She groped blindly until her legs bumped into something,

and he finally stopped.

Then the lights flicked on, revealing Liora in front of them.

The next second, Evelynne nearly threw up.

“Carmen, are you crazy? Why would you bring me to look at a corpse?” she screamed, covering her mouth and struggling

not to collapse.

But he seemed mad as he pressed her forward, forcing her close enough to see the maggots writhing beneath Liora’s

skin.

“Evelynne, don’t you remember? You killed her. You hired someone who broke in and stabbed Liora to death. It happened

exactly when you returned to the pack.”

Evelynne’s pupils constricted as her nose nearly touched the disgusting sight.

“But Liora was still alive afterward!”

“Yes. That day, Liora was alive. She still had a chance to live. But because of you-your malice-I refused her every time.”

Carmen’s eyes sharpened as he released her. Evelynne almost fell onto Liora’s body and could no longer hold back. She crawled to the side and began vomiting uncontrollably.

He revealed the truth: after being killed, Liora was given five days-five days in which if Carmen had said the words “I love you” even once, she could have lived. But someone kept stopping it.

As he spoke, his eyes locked onto Evelynne’s, full of burning anger.

She couldn’t help but tremble and pale.

Finally, she understood why Carmen was so furious. She tried to explain desperately.

“I didn’t want to do any of this, but I love you, Carmen! I don’t want to be your secret. I want to be with you openly and proudly! Everything I did was for our future. I know you couldn’t bear to break the mate bond with Liora, so I had to use

this way!”

“Carmen, don’t you believe me? I did all this because I love you!”

Carmen’s voice was complicated, his lips curling into a cruel smile.

“You say you love me?”

Evelynne nodded eagerly, hope shining in her eyes.

“You love me? You left the pack the year I was attacked by that rogue, then only came back when you heard I became the

Alpha of the pack. Evelynne, is this how you love me?”

“It was Liora who cared for me until I healed. You say you love me but where were you when I needed you the most?”

Carmen’s accusations hit Evelynne hard. Her flicker of hope died instantly. She hadn’t expected him to know about that

time.

Her face went pale as she shook her head repeatedly.

“No, no, I didn’t come back for money, Carmen. Please believe me…”

Carmen’s expression turned cold.

“I believed you and it killed Liora! During those five days, I had countless chances to save her, but because of you, because of your scheming and slander, I couldn’t keep her alive.”

With each word, the fury in Carmen’s eyes grew stronger, and his grip tightened.

He squeezed Evelynne’s chin until her feet lifted off the ground. Her face flushed red, lips tuming purple, eyes rolling back.

She couldn’t even manage a word of protest.

Fear surged through her like never before-this was the first time she’d seen this side of Carmen: mad, reckless, and

merciless.

Tears welled at the corners of Evelynne’s eyes. She struggled to breathe, whispering weakly,

“S-sorry… Carmen… Carmen…”

Every word was a last effort, but Carmen didn’t let go. He watched coldly as her breaths grew shallower, as life started to

slip away.
