Meanwhile, Freda was lying in a hospital thousands of miles away. When she’d left, her body hadn’t fully recovered.
During her journey, she’d been bleeding continuously and had collapsed several times from severe anemia, forcing her to stop and get hospitalized.
On the third day of her hospital stay, she received word from her lawyer that the documents had been delivered to Cyril, and he seemed to have gone completely insane looking for her everywhere.
Fredà felt absolutely nothing. She no longer loved or hated Cyril–nothing he did could stir any emotion in her
anymore.
“Thank you, Edric. You don’t need to tell me about Cyril’s business anymore.”
“Miss Lane, are you doing okay? If there’s anything you need, just let me know.” There was barely perceptible concern in Edric’s voice.
Freda’s lips curved slightly. “I’m doing fine, thank you. If you have time, I’d appreciate it if you could visit my parents‘ graves on their death anniversary.”
“Of course.” Edric agreed readily.
After thanking him again, Freda hung up.
Once Freda had recovered, she bought tickets for every flight departing at the same time again.
Having grown up with Cyril, she knew he was smart and had connections everywhere. As long as he didn’t give up searching, he’d find her eventually.
This was the only way she could delay being found.
Freda had planned to keep traveling, but she found herself stuck in a remote mountain village in the Southwest.
Halfway up the mountain was a tiny village–gorgeous scenery but incredibly impoverished.
The village only had elderly people and left–behind children. There was no school, and while some lucky kids got taken away by their parents for education, most just grew up wild in the village until they were teenagers and left to
find work.
Families traded crops and vegetables with each other, and everyone looked out for one another–if someone’s kid was doing well in the outside world, they’d make sure to help their neighbors.
Freda had stumbled upon this place by accident after getting lost. They only had basic water and electricity–no internet, no entertainment.
From her first day there, Freda was warmly welcomed. The elderly and children all loved her.

They were fascinated by the snacks and gadgets she’d brought, gathering around as she explained how things worked.
Everyone brought out their best to welcome her.
She was amazed that such a pure, simple community could still exist in modern society.
Freda decided to stay there temporarily. Every day, listening to the birds and insects, watching the blue sky and white clouds, her mood improved steadily.
On her third day there, a sudden torrential downpour hit.
The house belonging to Edith Walker at the village entrance collapsed in the flood. Everyone rushed to help rescue her from the debris.
“Sweetie, go hide somewhere safe. We’ve got this handled.” Mabel Greene, the grandmother who’d taken her in, pushed her away to safety.
“Let me help too. Many hands make light work.” Freda had been pampered her whole life and spoiled by Cyril for
ears–she honestly couldn’t do anything useful.
But in that moment, she desperately clawed at the mud with her bare hands, trying to help rescue Edith.
The rain was too heavy, quickly blurring her vision. She felt her head getting heavier and heavier until she collapsed.
When she woke up, the rain had stopped.
Mabel looked at her with deep worry and sadness. “Oh honey, you’ve been burning up with fever for three days. A little backwater place like ours isn’t meant for someone like you–you need to go back to the big city.”
Seeing the concern on Mabel’s face, Freda suddenly realized what she needed to do.
