When Freda woke up in the hospital, she felt completely disoriented.
She touched her now–flat stomach, her heart clenching with pain. The baby was gone.
“Room 23, where are your family members? We need payment for additional treatment. You’ve been poisoned with heavy metals and need to cooperate with the police investigation. Your baby… we couldn’t save it.” The nurse noticed she was awake and began asking detailed questions about her situation.
Freda’s fingers trembled as she picked up her phone to call Cyril. It went straight to voicemail–his phone was off.
She gave a bitter smile. After he’d left last night, he hadn’t answered any of her calls or even tried to reach her.
He’d once promised he’d be there for her anytime she needed him.
Now he was ignoring her calls to stay with Jolie.
“I don’t have any family. I’ll pay the bills myself.” Freda replied weakly.
“Wait, you can barely sit up. Let me take care of it–just get some rest.” The kind nurse stopped Freda from getting up.
As she left the room after taking notes, the nurse couldn’t help but comment, “God, women can have such different lives. There’s this other woman here who’s just got a little bleeding, and her husband’s losing his mind–rented out the whole VIP floor, flew in doctors from all over the world overnight.”
The nurse glanced back at Freda. “This poor woman was poisoned and lost her baby, and she doesn’t even have a single family member here.”
Freda heard the nurse’s words and knew she was talking about Cyril and Jolie. Her heart felt completely numb.
Throughout her entire hospital stay, Cyril never contacted her once.
She went straight to the Lane family mansion, took her mother’s ring, and stored all the meaningful heirlooms in a permanent safety deposit box.
She planned to sell the mansion and never return.
Then she went to the courthouse to change her name. She wanted to make sure Cyril could never find her.
When Freda returned home, she found Jolie curled up on the sofa, wrapped in her blanket, munching on snacks while binge–watching shows.
She frowned slightly, and before she could speak, Jolie jumped up from the couch.
“Miss Freda! You’re back! Did you grab dinner yet? Cyril went to pick up some cake–want me to tell him to get you a slice of chocolate?” Jolie’s face was all smiles, barely concealing her smugness.
“Who said you could touch my stuff?” Freda’s face was cold as she looked at the messy coffee table, feeling

suffocated.
She’d always hated people touching her things, especially having someone make a mess in her home.
Cyril knew her habits and rarely brought people over, and when he did, he’d always clean and disinfect everything afterward.
Now he was letting Jolie lie in her spot, use her blanket, eat her snacks…
“Oh, are you pissed? Fine, here’s your precious stuff back.” Jolie dumped the bag of chips directly onto Freda, raising an eyebrow. “Why don’t you clean it up yourself.”
Freda was stunned, about to respond when Jolie suddenly dropped to her knees and started cleaning up the mess.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry, Miss Freda! I was literally about to pass out from hunger–that’s the only reason I touched your snacks. Please don’t be mad at me–I’ll get everything spotless, I promise!” Jolie’s eyes instantly filled with tears, her voice trembling with fake remorse.
“Honey, what’s going on here?”
The sudden change in Jolie’s demeanor caught Freda off guard. Hearing Cyril’s voice behind her, she finally understood everything.
Freda turned around just in time to see him looking down at Jolie on the floor, clearly catching the flash of concern in his eyes.
“I shouldn’t have touched Miss Freda’s things without asking first.” Jolie kept her head down, voice choked with
tears.
“Right, my wife hates when people touch her stuff. Why is the living room such a mess?” Cyril frowned. “Take your cake and go home. Don’t come to my house anymore.”
Jolie looked stunned, slowly standing up to accept the cake Cyril handed her.
But the next second, as Jolie stood up, she seemed to lose her balance and stumbled directly toward Freda. Freda lost her footing and they both started falling backward together.
In a split second, Cyril rushed over and caught Jolie in his arms.
Meanwhile, Freda crashed backward, her head slamming hard into the shoe cabinet. Blood immediately started flowing as dizziness overwhelmed her. The last thing she saw was Cyril holding Jolie tightly in his arms…
