Samuel was detained for a week.
Even after he was released from prison, the police fitted him with an electronic ankle monitor.
Every time he got close to Julie again, the ankle monitor would emit a shrill alarm. Police officers stationed nearby would receive an alert and swiftly arrive to protect her.
In contrast, Connor-though he threw the first punch-had Julie testify that he was acting to protect her. So, he was released without being charged.
Samuel felt miserable when he weighed the differences in treatment.
But he never blamed Julie.
That was because after being released from prison, Samuel finally switched on his phone and carefully went through the chat history between him and Julie.
One look and everything became crystal clear.
“Fuck! So, this was all Cynthia’s doing!” Samuel was seething. “That bitch actually sent Julie those videos!”
The contents of the videos were obscene. On top of that, Cynthia had also added inflammatory comments under every video.
“Poor little Julie. Your husband is in my bed right now. Dare to come catch us in the act?”
“Your husband tastes amazing down there, Julie. I love it.”
“Your husband says I’m way better than you in bed, Julie. He says having sex with you is like sleeping with a log. What a bore.”
“You’re a complete disgrace to all women, Julie. If I were you, I’d smash my head into a wall and be done with it!”
Samuel’s face darkened with rage as he read the string of taunting texts.
How nice of Cynthia!
“I spoiled you. I was ready to hand everything I owned to your two children. And this is how you stab me in the back?”
The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. He immediately boarded a flight back to Wiscasset to give Cynthia a piece of his mind.

“Welcome home, Sam.” Cynthia lit up with a smile upon seeing Samuel. She greeted him sweetly and asked softly, “How did it go? Did you manage to find Julie?”
Samuel gave Cynthia a cold look. “Tell me, Cindy. Why would Julie want to divorce me out of nowhere?”
At his words, Cynthia’s face stiffened for a split second. Had he found out that she bribed the doctor to lie to him about Julie’s uterine fibroids being fatal?
But she quickly recovered.
“I don’t know either, Sam,” she said softly. “Maybe it’s because Julie doesn’t want you to have Luke and Anna inherit everything…”
Cynthia’s eyes reddened as she spoke.
She choked back tears and said in distress, “What should I do, Sam? I don’t think Julie likes Luke and Anna very much. What if she hurts them after I’m gone? Luke and Anna are everything to me. If they end up suffering, I won’t be able to rest in peace!”
The more she spoke, the more emotional she became. She broke into sobs and hid her face in
her hands.
In the past, seeing Cynthia break down this way would have made Samuel’s heart ache.
But now, all he felt toward her was disgust!
“That’s right. You have cancer and you’re about to die.” Samuel flashed a sinister smile. Then, he suddenly grabbed Cynthia by the throat.
“Didn’t you tell me that you only had a week left to live? Well, it’s been more than half a
month. Why haven’t you died yet? Don’t tell me you never had cancer. Have you been playing me for a fool?”
