Chapter 4
I spent three days in the hospital.
My fever had reached forty degrees. I nearly didn’t make it.
Daniel never came to see me. Not a single message. Not a single call.
I closed my eyes.
I hadn’t expected anything from him for a long time–but it still hurt a little.
Today was Daniel’s wedding day.
I forced my weak body to appear at the Brown estate.
When Daniel saw me, surprise flickered in his eyes.
“You should be resting in the hospital.”
“I didn’t want to miss your big day,” I said flatly.
Sophia came downstairs and caught sight of me. A trace of smugness flashed across her face.
“Hannah, you’re still not feeling well? You look so pale.”
“I’m fine,” I replied calmly.
“That’s good.”
She stepped closer and lowered her voice.
“By the way, Daniel said you’d be helping with the guests today. It’ll be easier if you change into the maid’s uniform.”
She pointed to a black uniform draped over the sofa.
I looked at the ill–fitting outfit and suddenly laughed.
So they didn’t even want to leave me the last shred of dignity.
“Alright.”
I picked up the uniform and changed into it right in front of them.
Daniel looked at me. His eyes flickered with a complicated emotion–it was something between guilt and relief.
But very quickly, he turned away.
The banquet hall was packed with guests. I stood in a corner in my maid’s uniform, bearing the weight of their pointed fingers and whispered gossip.
“Isn’t that the Brown family’s daughter? Why is she dressed like that?”

“What a disgrace.”
I listened to their comments expressionlessly. My heart didn’t stir at all.
The emcee took the stage to begin the ceremony.
“Now, let’s welcome the bride and groom to exchange rings.”
I looked up at Daniel and Sophia on the stage. They smiled so sweetly, as if the world contained only the two of them.
The emcee beamed. “I now pronounce you husband and wife. The groom may kiss the bride!”
Just as Daniel was about to lean in, the doors to the banquet hall suddenly opened.
A middle–aged man in a suit walked in, holding a file in his hand.
“Apologies for the interruption.”
He stepped to the front, and his voice rang clearly through the hall.
“I’m Mr. Smith, legal counsel and managing director of Brown Group, entrusted by Mr. and Mrs. Brown to deliver an
important announcement.”
The room fell silent.
Daniel frowned. “What is it?”
Mr. Smith unfolded the file. “According to the supplementary clause in Mr. Brown’s will, if Mr. Daniel Brown marries
anyone other than Miss Hannah, he will forfeit all rights to inherit Brown Group.”
“What?!”
Daniel stared in disbelief.
“Effective immediately,” Mr. Smith continued in a steady tone, “all shares and assets of Brown Group will be transferred to
Miss Hannah Brown.”
“Mr. Daniel Brown,” he concluded, “you are no longer the heir to Brown Group.”
