Chapter 16
Calista was already in a cab when she saw Lucien calling. But before she could pick up, her phone died. He seemed to have texted her too, but she couldn’t read what he’d sent.
“Miss, you still haven’t told me your
destination.”
Calista didn’t know which jail they’d taken Anthony to. So, she’d have to find Lucien and get answers from him directly.
When she told the driver that she wanted to go to Fenwick Group, he glanced at her in the rearview mirror. Calista finally reached Fenwick Group about 40 minutes later.
The moment she walked into the lobby, a receptionist stopped her. “Excuse me, only employees can head upstairs. Do you have an appointment?”
“No, I don’t. I need to see Lucien. Can you call him?”
The receptionist, whose nameplate read “Sarah Dawson“, looked amused. “Miss, Mr. Fenwick is incredibly busy. He won’t have time for you. Without an appointment, you can’t go up.”
“I’m his wife. I’m here about our divorce.”
Sarah burst out laughing at her words. “Oh, please, don’t be ridiculous. We’ve had eight women this week claiming to be Mrs. Fenwick. Your excuse is créative, though. Divorce? We don’t even know if the CEO is married.”
Her colleague nodded. “Right!”
“If our CEO married anyone, it would probably be Ms. Marchand. Definitely not you!”
Both women eyed Calista’s outfit. The fabric looked decent, but they couldn’t place the brand. They figured that it was probably a knockoff bought online.
“Miss, if you don’t leave, I’ll have to call security to escort you out.”
When Calista tried to use the front desk phone to call Lucien, Sarah rolled her eyes and called the security guard at the entrance over. Calista was quickly dragged outside.
The guard was big and strong. Calista couldn’t break free, and she didn’t want to cause a scene at the company entrance.
Galen was coming down from the CEO’s office to get some files when he happened to see someone turning to leave at the company
entrance.
He recognized that silhouette immediately. He knew that it had to be Calista! He wondered what she was doing at the office.
Galen went to the reception desk. “That woman who just left. Did she come inside?”
Sarah nodded right away. “Yes! She claimed to be Mrs. Fenwick and insisted on calling Mr. Fenwick. I think she’s lost her mind, so I had security remove her.”
Galen cast one last thoughtful glance at the distant figure before turning away. For her, leaving was probably the best choice as she
wasn’t cut out to be Mrs. Fenwick.
Calista didn’t know where to go. She found a convenience store and, her stomach aching from hunger, used what little cash she had to buy some food. She also borrowed a charging cable to charge her phone.
When it was half charged, Calista turned her phone back on and saw Lucien’s text message. Lucien had asked her to come to the office
to talk
Just as she was about to text him a reply, Rebecca’s call came through. Calista answered nervously, her voice trembling. “Mom…”
Rebecca immediately launched into a tirade. “Oh, so now you remember that you have a mother? Get back here right now! Your brother’s in the hospital!”
“What?” Calista’s eyes went wide. “Which hospital?”
After Rebecca gave her the address, Calista didn’t hesitate and took a cab straight to Riverview Medical Center. She arrived just as the police were leaving.
Rebecca was still wearing the same old, mud–stained clothes and rain boots she’d been working in. There were clear muddy footprints where she had stood.
It had been three years since Calista had seen her foster mother. When she did, she noticed the gray streaks in Rebecca’s hair. Her eyes
still held that fierce look, no matter how she looked at her.
Calista knew that Rebecca was all bark and no bite–tough on the outside but soft–hearted.
Calista had always been gentle by nature. When she saw Rebecca, tears immediately filled her eyes. She asked, “Mom, what happened to Anthony?”
Without saying a single word, Rebecca smacked Calista on the head. “You useless fool! I knew those Marchand people were no good. When they don’t want you anymore, don’t you know how to come home?
“If I hadn’t heard Clarice come here threatening to divorce Anthony, I wouldn’t have known you were back.”
“Clarice wants to divorce Anthony?”
Calista hadn’t expected that her divorce from Lucien would cause so many problems for Anthony. Now, even Clarice was talking about
divorce.
Rebecca snorted coldly. “I knew that woman was trouble from the start. She only married into the Cannon family for the little money we had. Now that we’re in trouble, she’s running faster than anyone.”
“What about Anthony? How is he now?”
