Chapter 21
Lucien remained just as cold and distant as ever, like a block of ice that no warmth could ever melt.
Calista nodded. “Yeah. I’ve thought it over. I’ve decided not to divorce you.”
adowed with an unreadable emotion.
Lucien opened his eyes and turned to glance sideways at Calista, his eyes
Compared to the way she used to be, Lucien felt that something about her was missing this time, though he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
“If you dare pull this divorce stunt again, then get out of Dorcan for good,” he said.
A sharp ache shot through Calista’s chest. “There won’t be a next time.”
In the end, Calista didn’t go through with the divorce. The entire Fenwick family treated her backing out of the divorce like a ridiculous
joke.
Calista was taken back to the Juniville estate while Lucien returned to Fenwick Group with Galen.
She stepped into the mansion alone, pausing at the entrance as her gaze swept over the empty living room. Everything that had happened over the past month felt like a dream to her.
She gently placed her hand over her flat stomach. Somehow, she could still sense her baby’s presence.
Calista dragged herself to the bottom step of the staircase and sat, staring blankly into the distance. This was the exact spot where she had lost her baby.
After Lucien left with Ophelia that day, she had collapsed here alone, watching her blood slowly spread across the floor. By the time she got to the hospital, her child was already gone.
There was nothing more devastating in this world than when the heart finally gave up.
Calista didn’t know how long she had been sitting in the hallway, lost in thought.
By the time she returned to her senses, it was already dark outside. The corridor behind her was pitch black.
She glanced at the time on her phone and saw that the battery was down to just over 10%. Her phone was on silent, and she had several
missed calls from Rebecca.
Calista headed upstairs to her room and called Rebecca back. The call went through after just a moment.
“Mom,” she said.
Rebecca’s anxious voice came through the line. “You little brat, where have you been? Your brother’s awake. When are you coming to see him?”
“Really? Is he alright now?”
A rare smile lit up Calista’s face. It had been so long since she’d had anything to feel happy about.
Rebecca replied, “He still needs to be monitored in the hospital. It’ll probably take another two or three months for a full recovery.
“I went to the hospital as soon as I heard that he’d woken up. Clarice was there too. She said you begged her to come back.”
Calista lowered her head and stared at her toes. She didn’t deny it. “Clarice was just upset at the moment. Anthony still needs someone
to look after him.”
Rebecca was so angry that she could barely speak. “Why don’t you ever listen? I told you not to go to her!”
Calista stayed quiet for a moment, then slowly said, “Mom, I’ve gone back to the Fenwick family. I might not be able to visit you all that often anymore. I’m sorry.”
Her voice trembled as she spoke, and she wiped away the tears from her eyes.
Rebecca let out a sigh but didn’t press the matter. “If they ever give you trouble, just tell me. I’ll go to the Fenwick estate myself and stand up for you.”
“Thanks, Mom.”
“Get some rest. I’m going to check on your brother now.”
“Alright. Tell him that I’ll come visit in a couple of days,” Calista said.
“I will,” Rebecca replied.
After the call ended, Calista hadn’t even sorted out her feelings when her phone started vibrating nonstop with WhatsApp notifications.
At first, she thought that it was something urgent. But it turned out that Jason was just using her for fun again.
The private room at Paradise Club was filled with people. Lucien sat in the center, drawing every eye with his cold, commanding presence. Ophelia was seated next to him.
The rest of the people were Jason’s friends and a few hostesses hired for the night. Those women kept casting eager glances at Lucien. But with Ophelia beside him, none of them dared to make a move.
Everyone knew that the woman sitting next to Lucien was likely to become the future Mrs. Fenwick.
Ophelia wasn’t someone to mess with. As Lucien’s acknowledged partner, she had the authority to kick those women out with just a single word.
Jason sat with one leg crossed, a smug grin on his face as he and his friends sent messages in the group chat.
He asked someone who had Calista’s number to add her to the group text chain.
A notification popped up on the screen. It seemed that Calista had already been added to the group.
Jason let out a laugh and typed, “What did I say before? Divorce? What a joke.”
He tagged her in the group chat. “Calista, you’re like gum stuck to a shoe. Weren’t you the one who wanted a divorce? What stopped /you?”
Jason acted like a bystander enjoying the show, but he was also the one making things worse. He seemed almost eager to stir up more drama, tearing Calista down until she was worth nothing.
One of the other spoiled scions in the group laughed before replying, “Jason, you’ve got guts! Your uncle is in this group text, too. Aren’t you worried that he’ll come down on you after reading those messages?”
Jason didn’t even look up. He laughed and texted, “My uncle doesn’t care about her. She’s nothing more than a trophy he keeps around. If she had any self–awareness, she wouldn’t be clinging to him like a lapdog, suddenly refusing to go through with the divorce.”
