Chapter 40
Calista’s lips curled into a bleak smile. She pretended to straighten herself up, but she was actually trying to cover her face with strands of her hair, feeling utterly embarrassed.
Yet, on second thought, she couldn’t understand why she was deemed so unworthy and unpresentable.
In any case, Calista’s response seemed to cater to Opehlia’s sick taste perfectly. Finally feeling satisfied, Ophelia rose to her feet and
spoke.
“Mr. McGregor, I’m sorry about this. The maid has just left her countryside hometown. She rarely went out and had seen little of the
world.
“We told her to use the bank card to buy some supplies for the kitchen. However, it seems that she just can’t handle responsibilities. I’m sorry for the trouble she caused you.” Ophelia was in a good mood, and her tone was much nicer than usual.
Brian sensed the unusual tension in the air. However, he was professionally trained, so he flashed her a big, bright smile.
“Ms. Marchand, you’re too kind. This is just a part of our duty. It’s my honor to serve both of you.
“That said, the bank card is now locked. I’m afraid that I’m going to need you to enter the correct passcode if you want to continue using it,” he said gently.
Ophelia nodded and responded, “It’s 311007. Go ahead and get it done, Mr. McGregor.”
“Alright, then. I’ll do it for you right now.” Brian didn’t notice anything unusual about the passcode. He quickly slipped away to begin the process.
However, Calista was crestfallen. The string of numbers Ophelia had uttered cut deep into her heart. When a cold breeze brushed past her, it felt like even the slightest breath tugged at her bleeding heart.
She had tried entering every family member’s date of birth. In fact, she even tried her luck and keyed in her own, but nothing worked. It had never occurred to her that the passcode was Ophelia’s birthday.
At that moment, Calista truly realized how completely defeated she was. She stood there, feeling numb and weak. By the time Brian returned, she was completely dispirited. She followed them numbly, but her pride was already in pieces.
As they approached the entrance, something suddenly popped into Brian’s mind. He stopped her and said, “Miss, please wait here for just a minute.”
He cheerfully went into the office and came out with kitchen knives and a cutting board. He generously handed them to Calista and said, “Our bank is currently running a promotional campaign. Since we kept you longer than necessary, I figured that we should make it up to you in some way. I hope you won’t stay mad at us.
Brian spoke to Calista as if she were a maid. On top of that, Ophelia was shooting her an intense, hostile glance. All of it combined to make Calista feel like a meaningless speck of sand sinking into an abyss of despair.
She took the kitchen tools from him and trailed behind Ophelia numbly. They had just walked through the door when the latter spoke in a carefree tone.
“It looks like you do know your place. At the very least, you knew that you shouldn’t be embarrassing us in front of other people.” Calista didn’t respond to Ophelia. Instead, she held the tools tightly and continued to walk forward.
Ophelia cast Calista a sideways glance. Perhaps out of a sort of condescending pity, she deliberately asked, “What are you still holding onto these things for? Haven’t you embarrassed us enough already? Wendy’s waiting for us in my car right now. If I were you, I would toss them away ASAP.”
Calista grinned bitterly and said nothing. She stubbornly clutched the tools and stopped in front of the car, looking as if she had resigned herself to fate.
As expected, a barrage of obnoxious curses came flying at her the moment the car door swung open.
Wendy didn’t hesitate either. The handbag she brought with her that day was something that she cherished deeply, yet she used it to hit Calista’s forehead without a second thought.
The intricate knitting on the handbag snagged strands of Calista’s hair and mercilessly yanked them from their roots.
“Oh my God! What on earth have we done to deserve a jinx like you?” Wendy was far from being kind.
She didn’t have the kind of time to get to the bank to pull Calista out of a pinch. If she hadn’t run into Ophelia outside the company, she would never have come here to tear Calista a new one personally

Calista stood where she was as Wendy hit and insulted her, looking like a lifeless husk.
Wendy struck Calista a few more times, but her anger merely intensified.
“Just look at you. You’re lifeless, pitiful, and downright shameful. It’s bad enough that you splurge with Lucien’s bank card, but you couldn’t even remember the freaking passcode.
“Are you trying to make everyone think that our family is broke? Is that what makes you happy?”
