Chapter 54
Alexander looked calm and composed. He knew that Cassius was just looking out for him, but he had never bothered with baseless complaints like these.
“They’ve already been disproven. It’s fine, Dr. Manings.”
Seeing that Alexander wasn’t taking the matter seriously, Cassius grew even more frustrated.
Just as he was about to speak, a knock came from the door. He looked up, only to see that it was Calista.
At the sight of the woman who nearly ruined Alexander’s career, Cassius‘ face grew increasingly dark.
“Ms. Marchand, is there a problem?” Cassius asked with a frown. He didn’t hold any personal grudges against Calista. He just wasn’t happy with the trouble she caused.
“Dr. Manings, the issue with Mr. Finnegan started because of me. I’ll take care of it myself. It has nothing to do with Dr. Lester. I hope the hospital won’t penalize him because of me-”
“You don’t have to worry about that,” Cassius said, cutting her off and looking up at her calmly. “Ms. Marchand, Alexander is my student. I know his character well. There’s no need for you to take the blame on his behalf. But as for your position as specially Jappointed assistant, I believe…”
His implications were clear. He and Alexander were cut from the same cloth. Calista should’ve known her place to begin with.
“I actually came here today to resign. I’m not familiar with the hospital’s internal process, so I thought I’d just report to you directly. Sorry for the trouble.”
Calista’s heart felt empty, and she looked drained. Without another word, she placed her resignation letter on Cassius‘ table, nodded slightly, and left the office.
Cassius glanced at the letter, then instinctively looked over at Alexander.
“You know who she is, don’t you? So why still get involved with her?”
Over the years, Cassius had seen the best and worst of people. He no longer had the desire to go out of his way to help others.
But Alexander remained as composed as ever. He still had the same easygoing smile on his face.
“If I had to judge someone’s status before helping them, then I suppose what I’m offering isn’t real help. Isn’t that what you always taught me, Dr. Manings?”
Alexander had his own set of principles. Even Cassius couldn’t do anything about it.
“Fine, as long as you know what you’re doing. Luckily, the Finnegan family left the hospital in a hurry, so let’s just consider the matter settled. As for the others, there’s no need to discuss them either.”
With that, Cassius dismissed Alexander with a wave.
Only then did Alexander leave the office.
But by the time he rushed into the hallway, Calista was already long gone.
She was now headed for Anthony’s ward.
Given how big the commotion had been in the hospital, and with the constant flow of people, word had spread quickly. It was no surprise that Anthony had already heard about what happened on the top floor.
“Anthony, why did you switch to this ward?”
Calista had gone out of her way to buy some apples from outside the hospital, acting as if nothing had happened at all.
In the past, Anthony had always stayed in a four–person ward. Everyone there had similar conditions, which made it easier for the doctors to provide treatment.
But today, he had been moved to a large common room. Each patient was given just a single couch. It was moderately sized, but definitely not enough for Anthony to lie flat comfortably.
“I figured since there’s nothing seriously wrong with me anymore, I might as well switch to a cheaper ward. There’s no point wasting all that money.”
Anthony spoke with a determined look on his face. But his words only made Calista’s heart ache.
