Chapter 6
Ophelia was speechless. She’d never imagined that Calista’s departure would affect Lucien this much. He didn’t even love Calista, so why was he reacting like this?
What should have been a family dinner ended in disaster. Ophelia stood frozen for a few seconds before snapping back to reality. Worried, she chased after him. But his Porsche Cayenne was too fast, and her Mercedes couldn’t keep up.
Rain was pouring down from the dark sky. Lightning split through the clouds, followed by booming thunder. On the busy streets filled with traffic, one car drove like a maniac, weaving dangerously between vehicles.
When Lucien reached the Juniville estate, he pushed past a maid who was about to leave and stormed through the familiar living room. His eyes fell on the couch.
Calista always loved sprawling there to watch mindless TV shows. No matter how late it was or what time he returned home, there was always a familiar figure waiting for him.
For a moment, Lucien felt disoriented. He could almost see her again–running to him barefoot the moment she saw him return, throwing her arms around him.
“Honey, you’re home!”
But the vision lasted only an instant before dissolving into nothing. The entire living room felt cold and empty.
“Where is she?”
Clover’s eyes darted nervously. “Mrs. Fenwick hasn’t been back since you left on your business trip.”
Calista had been back home in Brego recovering from her injuries. Over a month had passed, and her wounds had mostly healed. By her calculations, Lucien should have been back for about two weeks now.
Calista couldn’t tell if she felt relieved or disappointed. During this time, Lucien hadn’t made any moves regarding her departure.
She figured that it was probably for the best. She’d given up hope anyway. Once he signed the papers, he could finally be with Ophelia like he’d always wanted.
She hadn’t actually seen Rebecca during this visit. Instead, she was hiding out in Anthony’s newly renovated house, recovering in private while he covered for her.
Their family had struggled financially in the past. However, things had gotten better after Anthony worked his way up and started his own factory.
Calista picked up her old phone to check her recent messages. She’d put her phone on Do Not Disturb to get some proper rest and avoid
all the drama.
Her phone dinged with group chat notifications. This was a group she’d joined back when she was trying to fit into Lucien’s social
circle.
But she’d eventually realized that no matter how hard she tried to please the people around him, she’d never truly belong. They just
saw her as entertainment.
She glanced through the messages. Most of them were from Lucien’s nephew, chatting away with his buddies. Lucien and Ophelia were also in the group, but they rarely chatted and usually just lurked in the background.
Someone had typed, “Jason, last time someone said that Calista wouldn’t last two hours. It’s been almost a week now.”
Lucien’s nephew, Jason Fenwick, popped up. “Just wait! That woman will come crawling back eventually.”
“Did your uncle actually divorce Calista? I don’t buy it. She’s like a leech that your uncle could never shake off. How did she agree to divorce so easily? Do you think she grabbed a few million dollars and ran?”

Jason replied, “She’s got no skills or brains. Where is she going to go without depending on Uncle Lucien? He’s just not bothering to look for her.
“If he had really wanted to find Calista, he could have had her dragged back within hours. The real fun comes later. Once Calista realizes how tough it is out there, she’ll definitely come back begging.”
Something twisted in Calista’s chest. She tapped out a reply. “Don’t hold your breath. I’d rather die than return!”
After hitting send, Calista left the group and deleted every contact tied to the Fenwick family. Looking through her other messages, she
saw that plenty of people had texted her–Jason, among them, with several texts.
