Something unpleasant flickered across Wayne’s face.

“You’re talking about White?”
“Yes. His family has a long history, but they’ve never played fair. Worse, they have close ties with several foreign political figures. You should keep your distance.”
Sierra hadn’t expected this. She quickly nodded.
“Understood.”
She was tempted to ask if it had been White’s family that once threatened Susie. But she knew Wayne would never tell her, so she let it drop.

They walked a bit longer before Sierra helped Wayne back inside.
Jonathan had just wrapped up his work and was on his way to find them. When he saw them return, he simply said,
“Grandpa, it’s getting late. We’ll head out now.”
“It’s dark out–why don’t you two stay the night?”
“No need. Sierra has class tomorrow. This place is too far; we might not make it in time.”
As he spoke, Jonathan helped Sierra with her coat. After saying goodbye, they left.
On the drive home, Jonathan asked,
“Grandpa didn’t give you a hard time, did he?”
He knew all too well the kind of person Wayne was. Tactics, pressure, manipulation–Wayne always had a
way.
He was
worried Sierra had been put in a difficult spot.
“What would he make things hard for me about? I’m your most important person. And since he cares so much about you, he treats me very nicely now. After all, he’s hoping I’ll say good things about the Wynn family.”
Sierra joked playfully.
Her teasing lightened the mood in the car.
Sierra hesitated several times but ultimately said nothing about what Susie and Wayne had told her recently.
Because if Jonathan had wanted to know, he would’ve asked.
