Cassandra was entirely caught off guard and gave a grunt when Ryan kissed her.
It was so absurd that, for a moment, Cassandra thought she must still be dreaming. But the sharp, stinging pain on her lips shattered that illusion.
Ryan’s kiss was rough. It was more like biting and sucking than anything gentle. The moment she opened her mouth to speak, he captured her breath entirely.
Cassandra pushed at his shoulders, but it was useless–her strength did not affect him. Instead, her struggle only seemed to provoke him further, making him even more frenzied in his assault.
“Cassie! Cassie!” Cameron’s voice rang out from Cassandra’s phone, but she couldn’t answer.
“Cassie, did something happen?”
The silence continued.
“Cassie, where are you? Say something!”
Suddenly, Ryan stopped. A slow, wicked grin spread across his face as he dangled the phone in front of her. “Should I tell him what I just did to you?”
Cassandra gasped for air, her mind blank from the lack of oxygen. She couldn’t speak, only breathe.
Tear welled up in her eyes as her body reacted in fear from the lack of air.
Ryan wiped one away with his finger, smearing it slowly across his thumb. “What’s with the tears? Do you feel wronged?”
His breath was hot against her skin. Cassandra twisted her face away, desperate for fresh air.
At that moment, Cameron barked from her phone, “Cassie, don’t be afraid! I’m calling the police right now! Don’t hang up! I’ll have Harold track your phone signal-”
Daisy’s voice also rang out, sounding equally panicked. “Cassie! Are you okay? Can you hear
me?”
Cassandra reached for her phone, but Ryan lifted it out of her reach, holding it high above her head. She stood on tiptoe, trying to grab it.
“Give… Give it back…”
Ryan took the chance to lean in and kissed her lips again, catching her off guard. “Let me talk to him instead.”

hit the speakerphone button.
“Cameron,” Ryan said.
There was a long pause on the other end before a hesitant voice finally asked, “Who are you?”
Ryan chuckled. “Don’t you recognize my voice?”
There was silence.
Cameron stood frozen, unable to speak. It was as if someone had stuffed his throat with
cotton.
Ryan continued, “Cassie’s been with me all day.”
The silence on the other end continued.
“We had lunch, walked the dogs, and watched the fireworks together. Oh, we also got to witness your dramatic love story with Annabelle. Now? She’s in my arms.”
The silence on the other end progressed.
“Want to hear her voice?”
Ryan held the phone close to Cassandra’s mouth. She was still breathing heavily, recovering from the lack of air. But through the speaker, even that sounded strangely intimate.
He pulled the phone back and added, “She’s tired and not in the mood to talk. Oh, and one more thing, Cameron. You’ve interrupted us enough for one night. It’s getting incredibly annoying.”
Cameron still said nothing. It was hard to tell if he was still in shock or just speechless.
