Cameron led Cassandra upstairs, heading straight to the women’s section. He looked like he was burning with frustration. For everything that caught his eye, he asked the staff to get one in Cassandra’s size and wrap them all up.
The sales associate gently reminded him, “She can try them on first if you’d like.”
Cameron said, “No time for that. If they don’t look good, we’ll just donate them.”
The sales associate fell silent after that and quietly started packing everything.
The two arrived home with their arms full of shopping bags, only to see a familiar car parked at the entrance. Cameron’s expression instantly tensed.
When they walked into the living room, both his parents were there. Lisa had already served them coffee, but both of them looked visibly displeased.
Cassandra had been through this before. She knew the drill well by now.
Sure enough, Simon Dorsey was the first to speak. “Why did you get back so late?”
Cameron pulled Cassandra behind him. “I took Cassie shopping for clothes. Mom, Dad, what brings you here?”
A loud bang rang out as Simon slammed the table. “If I hadn’t shown up, I might’ve lost my grandchild!”
Cameron looked confused. “What grandchild?”
Cassandra had never been eager to have kids, or at least not so soon. But Cameron’s parents were constantly pressuring him. They showed up at least twice a month to nag about it.
“Cassie and I are still young. We just want to enjoy a few more years together first. There’s no rush to have kids,” Cameron said.
‘You may not be in a rush, but the child can’t wait.”
Simon grabbed a paper off the table and threw it at him. “Take a look for yourself!”
Cameron picked it up off the floor and realized it was a medical report. More specifically, it was a prenatal check–up report. The report showed that the embryo was viable, and the pregnancy was four weeks along. The name on the report was unmistakable–Annabelle Green.
Grace Huber stood up and scolded angrily, “Cameron, have you lost your mind? Why would you turn your back on your own child? So you’d rather stay with Cassandra and leave the Dorsey family with no heirs?”
Cameron grew anxious. “It’s not like we don’t want kids. We just thought we’d wait a little longer.”
“So, you’re not denying that Ms. Green is carrying your child, are you?”
Cameron was at a loss for words. He turned to Cassandra. “I didn’t-”
Grace cut him off, “That’s all I needed to know. We’ve already brought Ms. Green here to make sure she can get a proper rest. The child needs a father. Cameron, how you deal with this is up to you now.”
Simon and Grace left without another word. The spacious living room sank into complete silence.
Lisa had heard everything. She had probably pieced most of it together, but she didn’t dare to say a word at that moment. Considering her age, Cassandra told her to go get some rest.
Lisa hesitated before asking, “Should I still make the herbal soup today?”
That soup was meant to support their efforts to have a baby together. But now that Cameron had gotten someone else pregnant, whether to go through with it had become a tricky question.
Cameron answered, “Make it.”
Cassandra responded, “I had lunch with Daisy and ate too much, so I’m skipping dinner. If you’re making it, just prepare his.”
She went upstairs and stepped into the main bedroom.
All her personal documents were in the drawer of the room. She took them out and slipped them under
the mattress, just in case Cameron tried to confiscate them. When she needed to file for divorce in a
month, she didn’t want to be without her documents.
She heard Cameron coming upstairs in a rush, his footsteps heavy and fast.
Cassandra simply stood by the window and waited.
He burst through the door but abruptly stopped in his tracks. “Cassie.”
“Yes,” she answered. “Let’s get a divorce. I’m serious.”
Cameron shook his head in a panic. “No…”
She looked him in the eye. “Give the child a father.”
