Chapter 53
Luckily, Cameron still had a good friend who could help him. He made a call. “Ryan, how is Cassandra…”
“Are you home right now?” Ryan’s voice sounded unusually serious and a little urgent.
Cameron was confused. “Yeah, I’m home.”
“Your parents‘ place or your own?”
“Of course, my own. Mine and Cassie’s place.”
“Alright, I’ll be there in about ten minutes.”
Cameron was stunned. “Aren’t you in Stokelle? Why are you suddenly back? And why are you coming over so late at night? What, did your woman ditch you again?”
Ryan paused, then said, “Let’s talk when I get there.”
“Fine, I’ll get the beer ready. The two of us can drink the night away—
“I’m not drinking,” Ryan interrupted. “Cassandra’s coming too.”
Hearing Cassandra’s name was like flipping a switch. Cameron’s foggy mind snapped back to clarity. “Cassie’s coming to see me? She has finally agreed to meet?”
“We’ll talk when we get there.”
Cameron ended the call, his face lighting up with joy.
He rushed to turn on every light in the house. Cassandra liked it bright and didn’t like the dark. Then, he made her some freshly squeezed orange juice. What else? Oh, right! She’d probably be hungry at this hour.
He ordered seafood chowder, which wasn’t too heavy for a late meal and easy to digest. Cassandra had praised this restaurant’s chowder before. She should like it.
He even set her slippers out by the door so that she could change into them as soon as she
came in.
At last, the doorbell rang. Cameron opened the door almost the instant the bell sounded. ”
Cassie…”
A sharp slap landed across his face, snapping his head to the side. Stunned, Cameron clutched his cheek and looked at Cassandra.,
She looked worn out, like she had just stepped off a long flight, but her eyes were blazing and her expression was fierce as she stared him down.
“Cassie, what are you—”

She slapped him across the face again.
Ryan stepped forward to grab her arm. “Calm down-”
“Don’t get in my way!”
“I’m not stopping you. Just saying, hitting him must hurt your hand too.”
Cameron stood there in shock, totally lost. “Cassie, what happened?”
It was Ryan who finally answered, “Snowball died.”
Cameron’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What?”
“The staff said you were the only one who visited today. You even brought her favorite treats. She died not long after you left.”
Cameron rushed to explain, “Those treats were from home. You made them for Snowball yourself not long ago. I’ve taken care of Snowball for 15 years. Why would I ever hurt her?”
“I know it probably wasn’t you. But that leaves your parents or Annabelle. It’s one of those three,” Cassandra said coldly.
Cameron shook his head. “No way. Annabelle is in the hospital, and my parents never…”
He stopped short, suddenly freezing. Not long ago, his parents had set a cruel trap for Cassandra just to force her into divorcing him. This time, it wasn’t Cassandra who got hurt but the one she loved most–Snowball.
Cameron pressed his fingers to his brow, wiped his face, and said, “Cassie, give me some time. I’ll get to the bottom of this.”
“No need,” Cassandra said coldly. “I came here to tell you this. Whether it was your parents, your mistress, or even you who poisoned Snowball–none of you are getting away with it.”
