Chapter 58
When Cassandra left the Dorsey residence, she felt as if all the strength had been drained from her body.
A moment ago, the fury had kept her going, but how that it had faded, she could barely stand.
She wobbled and almost collapsed, but instead of feeling pain, she found herself falling into a broad, warm embrace.
“Ryan?”
Ryan steadied her, holding her upright. “You were all fire and brimstone just now, and now, you’ve gone all limp?”
Cassandra tried to stand up straight, but the heels she wore felt like torture. She couldn’t keep her balance and started to tip over again.
Ryan caught her and drew her back into his arms. “Alright, just lean on me.”
Her head was spinning, and her face was as white as a sheet. Even her lips had lost all color.
Ryan picked her up in his arms and calmly carried her out of the Dorsey residence. “I’ll take you back for some rest first.”
Cassandra forced her eyes open. “Where to?”
“My place.”
“No, I’m not going,” she protested, trying to wriggle out of his grasp. “I can’t afford your rent.
Ryan shifted her in his arms, and she rolled right back into his embrace.
“This time, I’m not charging you.”
“Since when have you been so generous?”
“Let’s just say I had a rush of compassion, feeling sorry for you after such a loss, and I want to do something good for society.”
To Cassandra, Snowball was a little girl. Even though Snowball was 15 years old, Cassandra had long since regarded her as family.
Just the mention of Snowball made Cassandra grip Ryan’s shirt tightly.
Snowball’s death had truly broken her.
“You’ve been through enough tonight. Let’s get you home. Have something to eat and a good night’s sleep. Leave Snowball’s matter to me.”

Cassandra said softly, “Snowball always liked you
Snowball was the sort of dog who warmed to people quickly and was sweet and obedient.
Whenever Ryan had visited before, Snowball would welcome him as if he were royalty -her ears perked, tail wagging, and begging for attention and cuddles.
Ryan smiled faintly. “That’s true. You trained her well.”
“But I couldn’t see her through to the end.”
He hugged her even tighter. “We’ll get justice for her, together.”
Cassandra’s voice was barely above a whisper. “But even the police said there’s nothing they can do.”
“There’ll be a way.”
After the police left, the living room in the Dorsey residence was utterly silent.
Shards of pottery and soil were strewn everywhere, but none of the staff dared to come out and tidy up. They’d all retreated to their rooms, doing their best to make themselves invisible.
Cameron asked, “Who poisoned the dog?”
Simon slammed his fist on the table. “Now, you’re interrogating your father? Have you no respect for your parents?”
“After Cassie left, only Lisa and I were here. You paid off Lisa to poison the treats, didn’t you?”
Grace said angrily, “Cameron, it was just a dog. Is it worth speaking to us like this? If you have the time to spare, you’d be better off caring about Annabelle. She’s carrying your child, after all!”
Simon added, “Exactly! At least Annabelle has her head screwed on straight, unlike Cassandra! Get the divorce sorted, marry Annabelle, and give the child the status he rightfully deserves.”
