Thinking about her failing memory, Sophia didn’t argue.
Last day anyway. If she’d promised, she’d keep it.
On the drive to the gala, Nathan glanced at her and couldn’t help asking: “What’s your deal lately? You always forget things.”
His irritation was clear. Sophia looked down: “Just tired, I guess.”
With her answer, Nathan went quiet.
After arriving at the Millennium Charity Auction, Sophia took Nathan’s arm into the ballroom.
The massive hall sparkled with chandeliers, packed with celebrities and society types.
The moment she walked in, she spotted Lucas and Lily immediately, they are surrounded by admirers. Under the lights, they looked like the perfect couple.
Nathan followed her gaze and said mockingly, “I thought Lucas was crazy about you. Guess not so much after all.”
Sophia turned to him suddenly: “What about you? How much do you love me?”
Nathan met her hollow eyes and went silent.
Finally he said: “I married someone’s leftovers. That’s not enough for you?”
Leftovers.
Sophia couldn’t find a single word to say.
With big silence between them, they walked in together.
When her eyes met Lucas’s across the room, she saw pure disgust.
At the auction, Sophia sat close enough to watch Lucas and Lily’s constant displays of affection.
Just then, the auctioneer for tonight’s event appeared.
That is Summer.
Sophia glanced at Nathan. His eyes were locked on Summer like nothing else existed. And Summer always looked their way while presenting the items.
Suddenly, all the lights in the venue exploded…

Alarms blared!
Before Sophia could process what was happening, Nathan was already on stage, wrapping Summer in his arms.
“Emergency evacuation. Please proceed to the emergency exits in an orderly manner…‘
The crowd pushed Sophia toward the emergency doors.
She watched Lucas shield Lily while Nathan held Summer close as they moved through the chaos.
Sophia stood frozen until someone shoved her from behind. She hit the ground hard.
Sophia didn’t know how she’d made it home alone.
Cuts covered her body, but all she could see were the two men she’d loved most–and who had once claimed to love
her–protecting other women as they escaped.
She treated her wounds by herself. Even with glass shards embedded in her hands, she felt nothing.
After cleaning herself up, Sophia lay in bed unable to sleep.
At 2 AM.
Nathan finally came home, disheveled.
eeing her awake, he asked with concern, “Someone tried to rob the auction tonight. You okay?”
ophia didn’t answer. Instead, she asked: “Summer’s back. Why you didn’t tell me?”
Jathan’s face shifted. “We’re over. Why would I tell you? You think I’d cheat like you did?”
Sophia watched him lie and smiled bitterly. “Just not yet.”
Her reaction made Nathan feel a bit of nervous.
But before he could respond something, his phone rang.
Whatever the caller said made Nathan’s face change completely.
He hung up and looked at Sophia: “Emergency at work. I have to go. We’ll talk tomorrow.”
He rushed out without another word.
Sophia watched him leave, then pulled out her phone.
She booked two tickets for 8 AM back to her hometown.
