Following the last bit of responsibility I had to my family, I told Jennifer and Blake what had happened. To thank us, Blake gave us a wedding invitation.
Looking at the wedding invitation, I smiled bitterly.
If Ashley hadn’t gone down the wrong path, things would have been better.
As we walked into the banquet hall, the waitstaff led us to a seat near the family.
I calmed my nerves and prayed that nothing would happen today.
Although the police had issued an arrest warrant, they still hadn’t found Ashley. Mom, Dad, and I guessed that she had found her old lover and hid with him.
Just as we sat down, Jennifer walked to us with Blake. As people whispered, Jennifer smiled at me: “Don’t be nervous. I’m here to thank you for telling us about
Ashley,”
Blake also nodded to me: “We’ve arranged for enough security guards. Only guests with invitations can enter.
I felt relieved.
After comforting us, Blake and Jennifer went to another table.
I looked at them and thought about how well–matched they were.
Then I felt sad.
I thought that I would see Ashley get married.
Mom must have thought about the same thing. She looked around the room warily, but then she looked at the door.
Chapter 2
Mom must have thought about the same thing. She looked around the room warily, but then she looked at the door.
The wedding had begun.
The waitstaff pushed the door open. Security guards were patrolling.
But I still couldn’t relax.
I watched Blake take the ring. But then I heard an explosion and started to worry again.
The police behind me raised their guns. Ashley had a sharp knife, and the blade was pointed at the neck of the old man.
Even from a distance, I could see that it was the Sterling patriarch.
Blake held Jennifer’s hand and stepped forward, looking at Ashley.
I looked at Ashley’s stomach.
In just a few months, Ashley was pregnant again.
Jennifer said: “Ashley, what are you doing?”
When she heard Jennifer’s voice, Ashley’s dull eyes became fierce, and as she raised the knife, we saw the bruises on her arm.
She pressed the blade harder, leaving a cut on the old man’s skin.
Jennifer, you ruined my life!”
Her voice was sinister, making us frown.
Where had Ashley been these past few months?
Who gave her the bomb?
