Chapter 2 – Reject
MARCIA’S PERSPECTIVE
There was a moment of complete silence, after which Kael laughed in disbelief. “What? Are you crazy?”
I swallowed.

If I had a wolf, he would have been on his knees right this instant, clutching his chest and unable to breathe. But I didn’t have a wolf, so I didn’t have the power to reject him. It didn’t matter that I had his mark on my neck. I still couldn’t sever our bond without a trace like he could.
“Reject me, Kael.“I stared straight at him, my voice steady, unflinching.
“Look, Marcia,” Kael said, running a hand through his hair. “We can come to an understanding. What do you want from me? Rejection isn’t an option, it’s against my pack’s tradition. If you want, I can promise you a child. We can consummate our bond and marriage, and if you get pregnant with a male pup before Eunice, he can be my Alpha Heir. But that is all I can offer you.”
“Alpha Heir from a weakling like her?” Eunice mocked. “You’d be better off without an heir at all.”
“Euni–” Kael began, but I cut him off.

“Rejection is all I want from you,” I stated. “If you won’t do it, I will find a way.”
Eunice laughed. “She’s adorable, isn’t she? Trying to reject you. Do you feel the pain, sweetheart? Is your heart breaking? Are you out of breath, Kael?”
I couldn’t resist anymore. I stared at Kael, clenching my fists. My eyes turned purple, and he gasped, holding his chest and falling to the ground.
“Kael!” Eunice cried, stepping away from him. Her head snapped in my direction, her eyes going completely black.
In a swift move, she grabbed me by the neck and slammed me against the wall, making me lose focus. My fists opened, and Kael stopped gasping for air.
I smiled at Eunice, even as blood trickled from my nose and darkness clouded my vision.
“You witch!” she hissed, letting go of me and returning to him.
“I—I can’t believe she did that,” he said, still on the ground.
I pushed off the wall,my legs unsteady beneath me.
“Get out of my room. If you won’t reject me yourself, I’ll have the king order you to.”

“You will pay for what you did just now,” Eunice threatened, helping Kael to his feet and then leaving my room. The door slammed behind them, and I let out a chuckle, wiping the blood from my nose, as well as the tears that stained my cheeks.
Despite everything, it felt oddly good to be back. To connect with my true self again.
I was going straight to the king of Prim.
My father and brothers had sacrificed their lives for him and his kingdom. I had been training with Master Maxin when I’d received the news, and rushed home to find my mother sobbing over their bodies. I’d held her as she cried, and she’d begged me to get married.
Reluctantly, I’d given in to her request.
For the last year, I had been the perfect wife. Played the part of the mate to an Alpha Heir, even as the pain and anguish of losing my family stayed like a phantom limb. I would silently dream about vengeance and payback, until six months ago, when I came home to the dismembered body of my mother.
Then I’d realised she really only wanted the best for me. Security, safety, and a pack to protect me.
After losing her, I made myself completely forget about Wizard

Maxin, and his teachings in combat and magic. I’d forgotten my dreams to fight on the battlefield, shifting my focus to Kael, his return, and my new family.
But now that that family had betrayed me too, I knew what I had to do.
The first step was to kill the bond that tied me to that cheating prick.
The king had already decreed his second marriage, so not much could be done about that. But he couldn’t refuse me a rejection
now.
I stared out the window of the carriage, thinking about what I’d do once I got rejected.
I was going to return to my old house, and to Wizard Maxin—finish my training, and become the most formidable sorceress the kingdom had ever seen. I would find the ones who killed my family, and I would make them pay. That would be my new purpose. My new calling.
We reached the gates of the palace in about an hour, and I took a deep breath. The footman opened the door of my carriage as the guard approached it. I bowed my head in greeting.
“What brings you to the royal palace?”
“I am Marcia Xendale,” I replied, “daughter of the late Alpha of

The guard’s lips curled into a sarcastic, almost mocking smile. “You mean Marcia Lightwood, first mate of Kael Lightwood.”
His tone didn’t sit well with me. It made it clear I was going to
meet resistance.
“I would like audience with the king.” I still forced a smile.
He snorted. “On what grounds? To stop your mate’s marriage?”
My jaw ticked. “What I want is none of your business. I am the
er of the late Alpha of Moonshadow, and you cannot deny
audience.”
“Your father is dead,” he replied. “Keep the dignity you still have and leave, Marcia Lightwood. Prepare for your husband’s marriage. That is better suited to a woman.”
He turned around to return to the gate, as if the conversation
was over.
But I wasn’t going to let a rude guard keep me from what I wanted. So, I climbed out of the carriage and followed him to the gate. When he realised it, his face contorted with anger.
“What do you think you’re doing, lady?” he snapped. “Did you not hear me? Are you wolf–less and deaf too?”

My fists curled at my sides, but I maintained my composure. ” I will not leave.”
The guard fumed. He glanced at the others who stood at the gate with him, and their snickers annoyed him further. “I was respecting your stature as a woman, but you seem to forget yourself. Leave, unless you want me to treat you how you deserve,” he spat.
I stared at him, unmoving.
“Don’t forget that I warned you.” He stepped forward and grabbed me by the elbow.
Disgust rose in my throat. A mere gatekeeper dared to lay hands
on me?
“How dare you?” I said, trying to free myself from his iron hold. “Take your hands off of me.”
“Shut your mouth!

“You’re making a mistake,” I stated, but he didn’t care.
I couldn’t break free using physical strength, he had a wolf and I didn’t. Neither could I use magic on a royal guard. It would be considered treason and quell my chances at getting a rejection ordered by the king.
The guard tightened his hold until I groaned again, the carriage

getting closer and closer, all my plans shattering before me like glass.
And then a voice announced, “Stop!”
The guard froze, and so did I, my eyes widening. I knew that voice all too well.
We turned around, and my gaze fell upon him.
Younger brother of the king, the Alpha of the Darknight pack, and the unattainable dream of almost every young girl in the kingdom: Prince Dravic Dawnvele.
My brothers‘ best friend growing up, and the fiercest warrior in
rim.
Dravic—as the women in the kingdom had nicknamed
Just Dravic, for me and the rest of my family.
He strode up to us, his eyes black with anger, waves of dominance and authority radiating off of him.
“Let go of her,” he commanded, his tone making my heart race.
The guard obliged without missing a beat, trembling as he took multiple steps away from me.

“Yo—your Hness,” he squeaked out. “I—I was just showing the young lady her way home.”
“And who asked you to do that?” the prince asked in a low growl.
“I—I, I just thought–”
“I have eyes, don’t I?” He snapped. “You dared to disrespect the daughter of a war hero? Don’t bother showing up tomorrow— you’re done.”
