Chapter 13
I slowly woke up, feeling surprisingly refreshed.
“How long was 1 out?” I asked.
“Two hours,” Sophia said, helping me to my feet and leading me to the dining table.
Before me lay four dishes and a steaming bowl of soup. My eyes widened in disbelief.
“You cooked all this?”
Sophia gave me a teasing glare. “What? You don’t think I’m capable?”
“N–no, of course it’s not that…” I quickly shook my head.
I was just honestly caught off guard.
The food was delicious, clearly made with skill and practice. It wasn’t something a beginner could easily prepare.
“During my time abroad, I couldn’t adjust to the food, so I started cooking for myself,‘ Sophia shared.
“See? Now it all makes sense, doesn’t it?”
That cleared things up.
“The new company’s officially registered,” she added. “But… I’m not ready to share the name
just yet.”
I chuckled. “So that’s another secret?”
“Of course!”
Sophia smiled, her dimples deepening at the corners of her lips. She looked absolutely radiant.
We talked about everything, from small everyday things to deep, meaningful topics.
With her, there was never an awkward silence.
The hours slipped away effortlessly.
Before I realized it, the clock read 11:00 pm..
When I finally grabbed my phone, I saw dozens of missed calls and messages.
I was speechless.
“Why was my phone on silent?” I asked.
Sophia didn’t hesitate. “I put it on silent.
“It’s after work. Don’t you think you deserve a proper break?
“Camille’s just a big baby.”
She had a point.
And honestly, I couldn’t disagree.
I grabbed my phone and unlocked it.
As expected, every message was from Camille.
“Max, where the hell did you go? How dare you ignore my calls!”
“Bastard! Answer your damn phone!”
“Max, this is your last chance–pick up now, or don’t expect to set foot in Layton Group again!
“You worthless piece of trash…”
Each message was soaked in fury.
I almost called her back, but after a pause, I set the phone down.
In the past, I would’ve answered without hesitation.
It had always been my duty.
But now… I was on the verge of walking away from Layton Group. There was no reason to put
with Camille’s nonsense anymore.

Besides, she never contacted me for anything that mattered.
More than likely, she just wanted to tear me down.
Sophia was right–Camille was nothing more than a spoiled brat.
She had neither sense nor gratitude, only a heart brimming with malice.
“Aren’t you going to reply?” Sophia asked.
She
gave me a mischievous smile, and her eyes crinkled. She looked absolutely adorable.
“Nope.
“She’d just yell at me anyway.”
I put my phone down and stretched, feeling completely relaxed.
“Stay still,” Sophia said, slipping behind me.
“I’m pretty good at massages. Consider this your reward.”
I froze. “A reward?”
“Yep. A reward!”
Sophia didn’t offer any explanation, and I didn’t press her.
Maybe she was relieved I hadn’t immediately answered Camille’s calls.
I’d stopped trying to understand what was going on inside women’s heads a long time ago.
Her massage was deeply relaxing.
Before I knew it, night had fallen, and I was asleep on her couch once more.
The next day, I headed back to the factory.
The workload had only grown. Every project seemed to need my attention.
It was a hassle, but I dealt with it. After all, there were only a little over 20 days left.
The morning passed in a blur. When lunchtime came, I walked to the cafeteria with Vernon.
“Mr. Wexler,” Vernon said. “I had the kitchen prepare some chicken noodle soup for you. It’ll give you a little boost.”
He shot me a knowing wink, and I couldn’t help but smile back.
“Thanks.”
“Anytime!”
We had just picked up our trays and were about to sit when Camille stormed into the cafeteria. Her eyes were blazing with fury.
The instant she saw me, she zeroed in like a missile. Without saying a word, she snatched my tray and flipped it right over my head.
“You filthy mutt. I see you’ve suddenly found some courage!
“How dare you ignore my messages?”
