“Alright, mister.” The sales assistant took the necklace away and packed it up.
Camille was infuriated. She jabbed a finger in my face and shouted furiously.
“How dare you disobey me, you muttface? I said it before, and I’ll say it again. You are the Layton family’s lapdog. If I ask you to buy something, you should buy exactly what I want!”
She was so shameless that it made me feel sick. I ignored her, swiped the card, and left without any hesitation.
Camille was still pointing at me and screaming after me from behind. “I don’t care if you have to borrow or take out a loan. You have to buy the million–dollar necklace for me. Otherwise, I won’t let you off the hook!”
The huge mall was packed with people, but she acted like a shrew, standing outside the jewelry store and shouting at me. Many shoppers turned their gazes to us. They glanced at her and muttered among themselves..
I frowned slightly, turned around, and left, not intending to waste another second on Camille. Once I got back to Layton Group, I sat in my office and went through the documents.
I had taken care of all the work I needed to hand over and saved it on my computer. Camille shirked off her responsibility and never once liaised with me, but I couldn’t just let things run their own course.
I had to take care of everything and faithfully carry out my duty. Should Camille look for my help in the future, I could just tell her that I had compiled the information, and she could look for it herself.
As they say, time really did fly. In the blink of an eye, it was already Sunday.
In the afternoon, I was about to go outside for lunch. Then, I saw Kieran’s sports coupé parked outside Layton Group. There was an exquisite gift box in the passenger seat.
When he saw me, he let out a mocking laugh. “Well, if it isn’t the Layton family’s lapdog. Go on, tell Ms. Layton that I’m here.”
I glanced at Kieran and said calmly, “Mr. Zane, aren’t you very close to Ms. Layton? Don’t you know that she’s not in office today?”
His expression froze for a second before he frowned and stared at me. His voice was laced with anger when he asked. “Where did she go?”
I shook my head. “I’m not privy to Ms. Layton’s private schedule.”
“Why, you!”
Kieran flew into a rage. He stormed out of his car and was about to confront me. That was

when a pink car pulled up in a flashy manner.
“Camille!” Kieran’s eyes gleamed with excitement when he saw her, and he rushed over to her. He took the gift from the passenger seat and eagerly presented it to her as if he were giving her the most precious treasure in the world.
“I went to a high end store and got you this hand tailored party gown. Do you like it?”
Camille took the box and looped her arms in his ‘Kieran, I know you’re the best! The dresses in this store are exclusive and custom–designed. Even the cheapest one there costs 200 grand at least.
“Unlike a certain someone who wanted to buy a gift for me but didn’t have enough money. In the end, he settled for a cheap, pathetic gift.”
Kieran pretended to be shocked and gave me a surprised look. “Max, what gift did you get for Camille?”
I couldn’t be bothered to answer him.
Camille sneered and said, “He bought a necklace that’s a little over ten grand. It’s so cheap that not even a hobo would wear it.
Kieran burst into laughter as if on cue and shot me a derisive look. “Max, oh, Max. I didn’t want to say this, but just how much of a cheapskate are you? How could you have bought a necklace that’s just over ten thousand dollars?
“Are you out of money? Is that what this is? It’s fine, my friend. I can always help you out a little if you need it. Whatever you do, you can’t make Camille feel sorry for herself.”
I calmly watched as they put on their little act, not uttering a single word.
After Kieran was done feeling good about himself, he gave the dress to Camille with both hands.
“Camille, I went out of my way to buy this hand–tailored gown for you. It’s worth 680 grand. I hope you won’t think less of it. Budget has been a little tight lately, but once I have more money, I’ll spend 6.8 million dollars on you!”
Hearing that, I couldn’t hold myself back anymore and burst into laughter.
