A loud, crisp slapping sound rose in the air. I stared a Sophia in shock, who had appeared out of nowhere and slapped Camille mercilessly.
“H–How dare you slap me?” Camille roared as she glared at Sophia. Her face turned red with rage, and her breathing became heavy and rapid.
“So, what if I did? You deserved it, and then some!” Sophia’s expression was icy as she looked at Camille the way she would an insect.
“Didn’t you hear what M.”

call the police if you harass him again!
“Max, let’s go!” Sophia looped her arm around mine and led me to the car. Then, I drove us out of there.
I drove, feeling more alive than I had in a long time. From that day on, I never had to put aside everything I was doing and rush to her side just because I got a call from her.
What was more, I no longer had to crack my head to solve the messes in Layton Group or tiptoe around the Laytons anymore. I was now a man of my own.
“Do you want to grab a drink?” Sophia turned her head and looked at me. The breeze brushed against her face, making even the strands of her hair beautiful.
“Okay.” I nodded. “It’s your birthday today, and you get to call the shots.”
Sophia was a little stunned. Surprise flashed in her eyes as she looked at me, awestruck. “You knew?”
I pulled out a black box with gold embossing out of the glove compartment and handed it to her. “This is your birthday gift.”

“It has my initials! Thank you. I love it very much.”
“Here, I’ll put it on for you.” I pulled the car over by the side of the road, took the necklace from her, and fastened it around her neck.
Although it wasn’t expensive by any means, Sophia cherished it deeply. Pulling out her phone, she took pictures of it from several good angles, finally nodding in satisfaction.
When we were in a private room in a bar, Sophia raised her glass and said to me with a smile on her face, “Here. Let’s drink to your newfound freedom. Cheers!”
“I appreciate it.”

After several glasses of liquor, both of us became a little tipsy. She looked at me tenderly and asked, “What’s your next plan? Are we going to get our company up and running?”
I nodded in response. “Yeah, you’ve had my back all this time. I can’t let you down.”
As we locked gazes, the space between us increasingly became warmer.
At that moment, my phone rang, ruining the moment. When I saw Camille’s name on the screen, my eyes were brimming with disgust. I blocked her phone number without a second thought and took another sip of drink.

All of a sudden, the door to our private room swung open, and Camille stormed in with an icy expression. “You sure know how to hide. Did you think I wouldn’t be able to find you just because you didn’t answer my call?”
I shot to my feet and asked in disbelief, “Did you plant a tracker in my phone?”
“Congrats. You’re not a complete dummy.” Camille looked at me sarcastically. “You humiliated me in front of that many people. I won’t let you off the hook that easily today!” Then, she turned around, waved, and barked, “Get in here, guys!”
In the next moment, 20 men in black attire with bats and clubs in their hands barged in.
Sophia immediately became wary. She got up and stood in front of me, shielding me. With her gaze fixed on Camille, she asked, “What do you want?”
Camille snickered in response. She looked at me and smacked her tongue. “Max, I can’t believe you’re cowering behind a lady. You’re even more worthless than I thought, you coward!”
I looked at her with a cold expression and bellowed, “What do you think you’re doing?” “Isn’t that obvious? I’m here to mess you up!”
