Chapter 55
Hunter burst out laughing before he asked, “Who are you? Do I really need to ask? You’re nothing but the Layton family’s lapdog, aren’t you? We all know that.”
The other guys looked just as contemptuous.
“Huh? You’re going to call Camille now?”
“Sure, the Laytons have some clout, but we don’t think she’d come running over here to cause a scene for some muttface.”
Hunter continued, “Tell you what, brat. I’ll give you a chance. Make one call. I want to see who you can get on the line. Let me get a good look at what kind of trash you really are.”
“Fine. You asked for it.”
I shook my head, smiling. I wasn’t going to waste time trading insults with these idiots. I pulled out my phone and made the call.
“This should be good. Let’s see what kind of loser comes to bail you out.”
Hunter crossed his arms and looked at me disdainfully.
“You’ve got balls. I’ll give you that. I just hope when he gets here, you’ll still call him a loser to
his face.”
I glanced at him and dialed the number. After saying a few words, I hung up.
Hunter smirked and looked at me contemptuously. “All done calling for backup?”
I nodded. “Yes. He’ll be here any minute.”
“Great. I can’t wait to see what kind of loser you managed to drag over here,” Hunter said.
I blinked but didn’t say anything, though I had to admire him.
“Can we eat now?” I asked.
He laughed. “Sure. Let’s eat. I’ll do this as a favor to Sophia.”
I shrugged, meeting her puzzled look with a faint smile. “Don’t worry. Once that person gets here, Mr. Levine will let us go.”
Hunter snorted. “Let you go? Dream on.”
I didn’t bother arguing with him.
Sophia studied my face for a moment, then smiled. “Well then, let’s dig in. The food here is really delicious.”
She smiled as she served me some dishes.
Hunter’s face darkened, and he looked like he was ready to strangle me. But he simply crossed his arms and waited. He seemed to be expecting to see whoever I’d called, eager to make me eat my words.
Poor guy
didn’t know what was coming. Most people wouldn’t faze him, but once my contact showed up, Hunter would be singing a very different tune.
Just then, heavy footsteps pounded down the hallway outside. A moment later, a pot–bellied man in a suit burst through the door.
“Max! Who the hell is this person that made you call me over?” As soon as the man saw me, he immediately grabbed my hand in a firm handshake.
I smiled and said, “I didn’t want to bother you, Soren. But… your son won’t let me leave alone.”
After saying that, I looked at Hunter. At that moment, his eyes widened in shock as he stared at his father. It turned out that the person I’d called was his father, Soren Levine.
Soren stood there stunned, staring at his son with blank confusion. But a second later, he exploded, “Bastard, how dare you mess with Max”
He stormed toward his son without even asking about what had happened.
Hunter was stunned and quickly got to his feet. “Dad… What is going on?”
Soren was livid. Without saying another word, he backhanded his son across the face. He snapped, “How dare you pick a fight with anyone! Do you have any idea who he is? He’s the Reaper of Brinestone Logistics and our family’s savior.”
“If it weren’t for Max, our family business would ve been bankrupt years ago, and you had the balls to provoke him. I… I’m going to beat the hell out of you!”
After hearing those words, Hunter was rendered speechless. Everyone present was also stunned.
