Chapter 76
I spent the afternoon at the office planning how to assign the Centrise Group project once I had my hands on it. I never expected Soren to call me out of the blue.
He asked, “How are you doing, Max?”
I was touched to receive a call from Soren at this time. Everyone in Brinestone knew how the Laytons had come after me, and Soren had business dealings with them, too.
“I’m doing alright, Soren. But I doubt that you called just to check in on me, right?”
On the other end of the line, Soren chuckled before speaking in a slow, meaningful tone.” Max, I know your company’s just getting started. I think that the Laytons are going too far. D
“They partnered with Centrise Group just to crush you and would rather take a loss just so they could take all your orders. Honestly, there’s no point in continuing your company, is there?
“I happen to know the CEO of Centrise Group. How about I step in and bring the Laytons along, so you can sell the company. It’s better than letting it sink, right?”
Soren was right. Logically, selling the company off was always better than going under, but things weren’t that far gone yet.
“I’m not selling the company. There might still be a change of events.”
“Oh, don’t be so stubborn, Max. The Laytons threw 300 million dollars into the fire just to mess with you. How are you going to fight that?
“Tell you what, why don’t you sell the company and come work with me instead? I’ll take you to Hanyan, and we’ll work in the lumber industry. That’s still a good way to make money.”
His words warmed my heart. Countless people out there were around during good times and sunshine, but few would stick around for the storms and hurdles.
“Don’t worry, Soren. I’m really fine. A Layton family celebration party is coming up soon. Let’s talk about that.” Then, I chuckled and added, “Soren, this call was probably someone else’s idea, wasn’t it?”
Soren sighed and said, “Yeah. Benson asked me to talk to you. He told me exactly what to say:
“But I’ve also considered it. His words make sense. Just listen to me, alright?”
I could tell that he meant well. No one could say something like this without real concern.
“Don’t worry, Soren. I know what I’m doing.”
It seemed that Benson couldn’t hold back any longer.
Chapter 76
Alright then. I figured I should show him how far, Max Wexler, could go.
I thought that would be the end of it. But in the evening, Camille showed up while Sophia and I were reviewing the Centrise Group project.
Moreover, she didn’t come alone. She brought Desmond with her.
“This is the company, Mr. Zenn. It may look small, but once we acquire it, we can expand it and convert it into a transport warehouse for Layton Group.”
Camille began introducing the place the moment she got out of the car as if she’d already acquired our company.
Sophia was about to speak, but I stopped her. “Let her perform,” I muttered and watched the show with my arms folded.
“It’s a bit of a dump, but I guess there’s some value in it.” Desmond chuckled.
Then, Camille led him over to where Sophia and I stood.
“Mr. Zenn, let me introduce you to Max Wexler, the ungrateful mutt I told you about.
“He was a lapdog for the Laytons for three years. Then he thought that he’d grown some wings and tried to fly on his own,” she said, pointing right at me.
Desmond scanned me up and down before scoffing. “So, you’re Max, huh? I’ve heard a lot about you. Now that I’ve seen you in person, you do look like the perfect lapdog material.”
