Chapter 19

Aurora fell too fast and too hard. Her nails scratched several grooves into the handrail before she tumbled down the

stairs.

She only had time to cover her belly with her hands.

Everything happened in an instant.

On the stair landing, Lilian and Isabella’s heads collided, and they both fell to the ground.

Ethan felt something push against his hands amidst the chaos, then he saw Aurora rolling down the stairwell.

He reached out to catch her but grabbed nothing but air.

The stairwell lights were dim. The motion sensor light suddenly went out after no movement, leaving the eerie glow of the green “Emergency Exit” sign to illuminate the scene.

Aurora struggled to sit up after rolling down the stairs. She raised her head and saw Ethan’s hand still outstretched-he was the one who had tried to grab her.

“Aura!”

Isabella’s voice trembled as she called out.

Her shout triggered the motion sensor light to flicker back on.

She shoved Lilian away from where they had fallen and hurried down to the landing below in three quick steps.

“Aura, are you okay…?”

Her voice cracked with tears as she anxiously supported Aurora.

Cold sweat covered Aurora’s face.

Her whole body ached-from bruised hands and feet to a throbbing head.

But none of it compared to the pain in her belly.

The pain was so intense she nearly fainted.

“Aura…”

Isabella truly panicked because she understood Aurora’s condition better than anyone.

“She hit her head-there’s a scrape and some concussion.”

“There’s some bleeding below. The baby is still inside for now, but it’s very dangerous. If we want to save it, she’ll probably need to be on bed rest…”

The doctors had told Isabella all this when Aurora was first brought in.

They had also said that while treating Aurora, she had begged them to save the baby.

But now, after rolling down such a tall stairwell-this was all because of her, Isabella!

The guilt overwhelmed her, and tears streamed down uncontrollably.

Isabella immediately took out her phone to call for help, her hands shaking as she tapped the screen.

“Aura, I’m calling for help now. You hang on.”

Aurora was too pained to speak.

She felt something draining from her, something leaving her.

She forced herself to lift her head and saw Ethan turning to support Lilian.

She opened her mouth, wanting to call out to him, but no sound came.

So she just watched as Ethan gently pulled Lilian into his arms.

He held her carefully, as if she were fragile and precious.

The emergency exit sensor light flickered off again, and the dim light outside faintly outlined Ethan and Lilian standing

together.

Tears slipped down Aurora’s cheeks. Her heart ached uncontrollably.

“Ethan…”

As Ethan helped Lilian out of the emergency exit, Aurora called his name.

Ethan stopped walking.

He didn’t turn back.

Instead, he calmly stared at the cold white stairwell beyond the emergency exit.

It was late at night, and few people passed by. The place was quiet.

But Ethan’s heart was far from peaceful.

Everything had been chaos a moment ago.

By the time he realized what was happening, Aurora had already tumbled down the stairs.

What he saw was his own hand still outstretched, unable to catch her.

His fingertips dug into his palm as his clenched fists trembled violently.

“Ethan.”

Lilian called him softly from beside him.

He looked down and saw her swollen, reddened cheek and the small bump on her forehead.

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, his voice was calm.

“Aurora, you brought this on yourself.”

Then he walked out of the emergency exit with Lilian.

“Ethan!”

Behind him, Isabella screamed in heartbreak inside the corridor.
