Shawn shoved past the bodyguards blocking the door and stepped inside.
Everyone froze, unsure who the sudden visitor was–until Desmond recognized him.
“Shawn? Why are you here? No one wants you around!”
That’s when everyone realized—it was Brandon Ferguson’s eldest son, from the side branch of the Ferguson family.
I noticed Shawn’s hand resting on my shoulder like he was claiming me. I couldn’t help but smile.
Zeke saw where Shawn’s hand was and looked furious.
“What do you mean? Whitney, are you the wife he’s talking about?”
I was about to respond, but Shawn spoke first.
“Yes, we’re already married. We have our marriage certificates. It’s official.
“Don’t forget that I’m also a Ferguson. The curse runs through my blood.”
Rebecca turned pale. Her eyes were getting watery, clearly panicking.
Shawn, you’re a year younger than Zeke. You still have time to find another girl with a shadow–bound body. But Zeke is running out of time.
“If you’ll divorce Whitney and let Zeke have her, name your price. We’ll pay it.”
All eyes were on the two of us.
I had anticipated this exact moment since I was reborn.
If Zeke didn’t marry me, he wouldn’t make it. And the Ferguson family would go all out trying to make me save him.
But I didn’t expect them to still chase after me, even now that I was already someone else’s wife.
Zeke looked at me and pleaded, “Whitney, if you come back, you can still save me…‘
I looked at him and shook my head.
“It’s not that I won’t. It’s that I can’t anymore.”
Desmond rushed toward me. “Why not? As long as you-”
He suddenly stopped talking. His gaze landed on the red mark on my neck.
“You’ve already slept with Shawn?”

Once a woman with a shadow–bound body shared herself with a Ferguson to remove the curse, she’d lose the trait completely.
Shawn quickly raised his hand and covered my neck.
“It’s our wedding night–what’s so shocking about that?”
“Zeke, what do you mean by calling my wife late at night and begging her to save you?”
Zeke’s face twisted in anger, but I just smiled.
“Mr. Ferguson, weren’t you the one who said earlier that marrying Xyla was worth it even if it killed you? So why are you backing out now?”
“You-”
Zeke started coughing hard and then spat out a mouthful of blood.
Rebecca collapsed to the ground, sobbing uncontrollably.
“It’s over. Completely over. We searched for years and only ever found Whitney with that shadow–bound body. Where are we supposed to find another?
“It’s all your fault, Xyla!”
As she shouted, she got up and hit Xyla.
Xyla screamed and ran in circles, shielding her head.
“Zeke, you’ll be fine! I’ll call my parents and get the best doctors. They’ll fix this!”
But deep down, Zeke knew he was hopeless this time.
In the middle of the chaos, Shawn spoke up.
“Zeke doesn’t have to just sit and wait for death. There’s another option, but…”
