Chapter 20
The wail of the ambulance siren slowly dissolved into the night.
Rain poured down Melanie’s pale face, mixing with her tears. She stood in front of the villa, her fingertips. still stained and sticky with Zachary’s blood.
A glaring headlight pierced through the rain.
A black Maybach suddenly stopped right in front of her. Jeremy couldn’t be bothered with an umbrella and instead rushed toward her. Then, he wrapped his trench coat around her and held her in his arms.
“Melanie, don’t be scared. I’ll take you home.” Jeremy’s arms tightened around her. It was as if he never
wanted to let her go.
Melanie buried her face in his shoulder and smelled a familiar cedar scent.
He held her so firmly that she felt a slight ache in her ribs, but surprisingly, she stopped shivering.
It was very warm inside the car, and Jeremy wrapped a blanket around Melanie.
Then, he slowly revealed, “I recently reached out to Ascend Group, Larmo Corporation, and the other five major companies in the city. We worked together and bought all of Fuller Group’s shares on the market.
“The court has seized all of Zachary’s assets.” Through the rearview mirror, she could see Jeremy’s dark
and unfathomable gaze. “Zachary has nothing now, and he’s out of options.”
Only then did Melanie snap back to her senses and ask gently, “How is your injury?”
He had hugged her so tightly just now, so she wondered if she had touched his wound.
Jeremy smiled, his gaze full of tenderness. “I’ve recovered a long time ago, but you’
After a momentary pause, Jeremy continued, “Melanie, try to trust me a bit more. I can keep you safe.”
Jeremy had made arrangements for Melanie to stay in his villa, located on the hillside. She spent a long
and peaceful time there.
While she stayed with him, Jeremy mostly worked from home.
One of them would nestle in the couch, while the other would sit at the table. Both of them were
occupied with their own work, but still enjoyed each other’s presence.
Since they spent all their time together, Melanie seemed to develop a special feeling for Jeremy.
She was also getting used to Jeremy caring for her. Sometimes, she would think of preparing surprises
for him.
One day, Melanie woke up from her sleep and went downstairs in her fluffy slippers to find Jeremy

standing in front of the stove and frying eggs in the kitchen.
He had rolled his sleeves up, revealing his well-built forearms. His collar was left unbuttoned.
“Let me help you.” Melanie reached for the spatula, but he deftly avoided her.
“It’s an honor to prepare breakfast for such a renowned writer.” Jeremy skillfully flipped the golden eggs.
After moving into the villa, Melanie often lay on the armchair and wrote her novel in the glass room. Meanwhile, Jeremy would do his work some distance away.
Sometimes, when she had writer’s block and looked up, she would be greeted with his gleeful eyes.
One night, the rain was pouring down relentlessly, and the electricity suddenly went out while Melanie was writing a crucial part of the story.
In the dark, she heard a ruffling sound. Jeremy was walking toward her with a candleholder in hand.
Amid the faint, warm glow, he sat next to her and analyzed the characters and their actions in detail with
her.
“You seem more like the author of this novel than I am,” Melanie teased.
Jeremy only flashed a smile and tucked her hair behind her ear. “It’s probably because I know the author
better.”
His reply made Melanie’s heart skip a beat. At that moment, Melanie believed Jeremy was only trying to
cheer her up.
One snowy night, however, she finally discovered Jeremy’s real identity.
