The moment she opened her mouth, it was like drawing swords-
No warmth, no room for compromise.
Kyle was pierced by her icy tone,
but he didn’t get angry,
He bent his long legs and knelt on one knee by her bed.
“Baby, I know I was wrong. I truly know I messed up. Please give me a chance to make it right. I swear, for the rest of my life, I’ll never hurt you again.”
His voice was full of raw emotion, eyes almost brimming with tears.
Candice, however, remained utterly unmoved
as cold and detached as if she’d drunk a potion of forgetfulness.
“You don’t need to make anything right. You were simply staying true to your desires. You’ve had a great time dating these past six months, haven’t you? Keep enjoying it. As for me, I’m letting you go.”
Kyle felt her words slice through his chest like a knife.
He grabbed her hand and kissed it fiercely.
“I’m sorry. I’m a piece of shit. But it’s not what you think–me and her, we’re nothing. You’re the only one I’ve ever loved…”
“Stop.”
Candice yanked her hand back.
She had a million curses caught in her throat, but none of them seemed worth saying.
“Kyle, none of it matters anymore. We’re done. I’m absolutely getting a divorce!”
“You don’t get to decide that alone! I already tore up the agreement!”
Kyle’s eyes were bloodshot, on the brink of losing control.
Candice stared at him for a few seconds, then calmly said,
“Fine. Then I’ll see you in court.”
“You’re really willing to throw away all these years together? Please, just give me one more chance. I’m begging you.”
Kyle lunged forward and tried to hug her.
“I can’t live without you.”
“What the hell let go of me! Don’t touch me!”
Candice shoved a pillow at him.
On the couch, Charlie sat up, the blanket falling off his shoulders.
He rubbed his temple.
“Jerry. Water.”

He stood up, his voice suddenly gentle
Baby, you must be hungry. I had your favorite shredded chicken congee brought over. I’ll go get it.”

Candice ignored him
As soon as he stepped away, she saw Charlie sitting sideways on the couch.
Hepcheels instantly flushed red with embarrassment.
Her boss was her most faithful divorce drama spectator.
He hadn’t missed a single episode.
Charlie took the water Jerry handed him and drank a few slow sips
Then he stood up and walked out without so much as a glance toward the bed.
jerry quickly followed.
Candice couldn’t help but track that tall figure with her eyes,
wondering what he might be thinking at that moment…
“Eat your congee,”
A cold voice interrupted her thoughts. Her view was blocked.
Kyle was back, holding a white porcelain bowl of congee, looking sour.
Candice stared blankly at him for a few seconds.
“Just leave it there. I’ll eat it in a bit.”
Kyle said, “It’ll be cold by then. I’ll feed you.”
“I don’t need you to feed me.”
“Oh? You’d rather have Charlie feed you?”
Candice stared at him like he was insane.
“Dirty–minded people always assume others are just as dirty”
Kyle’s expression eased slightly when she denied it.
“If you resign from your job, I’ll believe nothing happened between you two.”

Candice stared at him.
“Then don’t believe me.”
As if she needed his trust!
Kyle’s face darkened.
“So you’re that eager to keep working for him?”
“Yes,” she said without hesitation.
“You got close to Charlie just to spite me. You’re using him to get back at me!”
Kyle spoke like he’d cracked the code.
He was convinced she still had feelings for him.
That Charlie was just a pawn.
But even a pawn like Charlie was dangerous.
Given time, she might really fall for him.

Candice chuckled coldly. She didn’t want to waste her breath arguing.
She grabbed the congee from his hand and said calmly,
“Thanks for visiting, Mr. Jackson. You may leave now.”
Mr. Jackson?
Kyle was stunned. This was the first time she’d addressed him so formally since they’d met.
He sat down at her bedside again.
“I’m not leaving. We’re still married. I have a duty to care for my wife.”
Candice: God, someone please assassinate this man.
She couldn’t get rid of him, and she wasn’t strong enough to throw him out.
So she just ignored him and treated him like thin air.
She placed the congee on the bedside table, but worried he might try to spoon–feed her…
With her knowledge of him, that was a very real possibility.
Fine. Better to just eat it now and avoid the hassle.
An hour later, Charlie came back in.
Along with Jerry and Jessica.
Candice hadn’t realized Jessica had stayed the night, only that she’d stepped out for breakfast.
Of course, Jessica didn’t stay out of concern or guilt-
She’d just followed Charlie back to keep an eye on things.
“Miss Hale, I’m really sorry about last night.

Candice found it all a bit ridiculou
She knew Jessica was only doing this in front of Charlie to redeem herself.
so she smiled politely.
“There’s no need to talk about forgiveness.
Given how things looked last night, anyone might have made the same mistake.
If anyone’s to blame, it’s Zack for being so good at pretending.
And you, Ms. Barnes, you’re just too kind–hearted.
This wasn’t your fault.”
She’d given Jessica a perfect exit, all while sounding gracious and magnanimous.
Charlie smiled inwardly. She really knows how to handle people.
Kyle, meanwhile, was getting jealous:
She’s willing to smooth things over with a near–stranger, but not with me?
“Thank you, Miss Hale. I’m deeply ashamed.”
Jessica bowed her head and glanced cautiously at Charlie.
“I’ve decided–I’m not fit to stay here anymore.”
Charlie didn’t even look at her.
He ignored the implication beneath her words.
His gaze stayed gently fixed on Candice.
“You did well this time. But don’t take risks like that again.
I’m not paying you to put your life on the line.
I’ll handle the rest. Just focus on recovering.”
Candice nodded.
“Okay.”
She looked into his eyes and suddenly felt a bit uneasy.
She turned to Jerry.
“There are still three days left in the schedule. Sorry to burden you with it.”
“Don’t say that! It’s my fault. I never should’ve let you go to the factory alone.
What if something had happened to you…”
Jerry trailed off, guilt flooding his face.

But he suddenly felt a chill at his neck.
Kyle was glaring at him with death in his eyes.
“Candice“?
Say her name one more time, I dare you.
Jerry quickly shut up.
He didn’t want to die today.
“My wife’s too badly injured. She needs rest.
She’s not fit to work as a secretary anymore.
Mr. Clemens, please find someone else for the role.”
Kyle declared.
What injury?
What right did he have to make that call?
Candice was about to argue when Jessica cut in first.
“Well, since her husband insists, let’s not push her.
Charlie, I’ll come back to the head office and be your secretary.”
