You’re Really Afraid of Dying
You’re Really Afraid of Dying
“Kyle!”
From the back seat of the passing white car, Mia Jones rolled down the window and shouted.
Caroline Jenkins was sitting right next to her.
Kyle heard her he saw her too–but he completely ignored it, his gaze so cold it was almost deranged.
“Mia Jones is here. She’s calling you. Didn’t you hear?”
Candice reminded him.
Kyle didn’t react at all.

Mia Jones watched the car driving away and frantically shouted for it to stop. She opened the door and got out to chase after it.
Running, she called Kyle repeatedly.
She chased the car all the way to the gate, screaming hysterically at the disappearing vehicle. Onlookers all thought she looked like a mentally unstable person.
Caroline Jenkins sat in the car, not telling the driver to go, nor getting out to help Mia Jones. She just sat there, expressionless, like dead water.
Screams echoed faintly in her ears, but she remained unbothered.
The family driver, Barton, glanced in the rearview mirror, puzzled
Why did Madam allow Miss Jones to come to the house today? She even went to pick her up in person, knowing full well that the Young Madam was also coming…
Kyle’s car had long disappeared from view.
Mia Jones collapsed by the roadside, staring at the now–invisible black speck in the distance. Her eyes were filled with savage jealousy and nearly deranged resentment.
She wanted to tear Candice into pieces.
She had spent so much effort just to keep Kyle with her for a few days–yet now, he was with Candice again. They had gone home together. Left together… They really looked like they were getting back together…
No! She couldn’t allow that!
Kyle belonged to her. She would take him back, no matter what!
On the other side of the road, a plain–looking business van had silently followed Kyle’s car.
Three minutes later, a voice message popped up on Charlie’s phone:
“Ms. Hale has been taken away by her husband. I’m still tailing him. Want me to stop the car and get her out?”
Taken away?
Charlie frowned deeply.
After a few seconds of thought, he replied:
“Keep following for now.”
He didn’t know what state of mind Kyle was in. Forcibly stopping the car could be risky.
The person on the other end replied with an OK emoji.

On the highway.
Candice noticed the speedometer climbing past 140 km/h and still going higher.
Her heart pounding, she clutched her seatbelt and tried reasoning with him.
“Could you slow down a bit?”
“You scared?”
Kyle said coldly, eyes fixed on the road ahead.
“I thought nothing frightened you.”
Candice silently cursed his entire family tree.
But no matter how angry she was, she wouldn’t dare argue at a moment like this. She forced a smile.
“We only get one life. I treasure mine. You should too.”
“There’s always a way forward. Life moves on. Don’t be rash. Don’t do anything stupid.”
She awkwardly spewed some inspirational fluff.
Kyle suddenly swerved, taking a sharp turn off the main road onto a narrow path.
Candice’s heart almost leapt out of her chest.
She calmed herself and looked out the window. The road was barely wide enough for two cars to pass. Trees lined both sides.
The sky was gradually darkening.
The blue hour, the twilight of demons–paired with this eerie atmosphere, it made the man beside her seem unfamiliar, as if possessed by something evil.
“Can I ask where we’re going?”
Her voice was tentative.
Kyle: “No idea.”
Candice:
They drove in silence for another five minutes before she spoke again,
♦
“I mean… there’s no real hatred between us, right? You just made a mistake every man makes. I’m just a little stubborn. We had
a beautiful love once. It was only time that wore it down. I don’t resent you anymore. You shouldn’t resent me either.”
Kyle turned to look at her.
“You’re really afraid of dying.”
Candice tightened her grip on the seatbelt.
What did he mean by that?
Was he angry because she insisted on divorce? Or because she threatened to take him to court, expose the audio of him and Mia Jones in bed? Was he planning to kill her?
Her mind raced. Who could she call for help?
The first name that popped up wasn’t the police–it was Charlie… That seemingly omnipotent man.

But why should he keep coming to her rescue?
“You thinking about someone?”
Kyle caught her zoning out and snapped.
Men have instincts too–it’s not just women with sixth sense.
Candice glanced at him.
“I’m wondering when you’ll finally stop the car. What if we run out of gas? How are we going to get back?”
She deliberately steered the conversation toward trivial things.
Kyle didn’t respond.

Candice cautiously slipped her hand into her bag. The phone Kyle had taken was a new one. Her important data was saved in the old phone, so she didn’t try to snatch it back.
In her coat pocket, she still had a backup phone.
She didn’t message Charlie. Instead, she sent Sophia her location every five minutes. She also typed a message–but who knew what autocorrect had turned it into.
Last time, she had tried to text “help” to Jim but ended up sending “hug~“…
Sophia, confused at first by the random orchard location, eventually pieced it together from Candice’s garbled message: “me north Kyle road walk“-this was a cry for help.
She got in her car and drove out.
She figured Kyle probably wouldn’t do anything extreme–just wanted to be alone with Candice. So she didn’t call the police.
The car kept driving.
Out of the orchard, onto the highway again, another hour passed. They went through a semi–urban zone, then a small town… farther and farther out. By the end, Candice had no idea where they were.
She checked the time. Nearly three hours on the road–it was pasto p.m.
Candice now simply hoped they would run out of gas.
♦
Finally, the car sputtered to a stop at the base of a remote mountain–no villages ahead, none behind. Completely deserted. No fuel left.
Spring thunder season–crickets chirped, frogs croaked.
Looking out, it was pitch black. Far off in the distance, faint specks of light flickered like sesame seeds… Was he really going to kill her?
“We’re alone now.”
Kyle rolled down his window and lit a cigarette.
The flare of orange flame briefly illuminated his sharp, handsome face.
He smoked in silence, loosening his tie with one hand. His dark hair was pulled back casually. He had the unruly, devilish charm of a sexy rich heir.
Right now, to most women, he’d be the fantasy: rich, domineering, dangerously hot–even loosening his tie exuded raw sex appeal. But to Candice, he was once that fresh–faced boy who blushed just from holding her hand…

She missed that Kyle–the one who was now “dead.”
“So?”
Candice took a deep breath and asked with resignation,
“What do you plan to do?”
Kyle exhaled a puff of smoke and stared at her. In the dim light, she was still stunning. Her figure–hugging nude–colored gown wrapped perfectly around her curvy body–narrow where it needed to be, full where it mattered. Like a ripe, fragrant peach. When she was aroused, her legs would wrap tightly around him, refusing to let go…
He leaned in close, his smoky breath brushing her skin.
“I think… the reason you’re so heartless to me is because we don’t have a child.”
